My wife invited a couple and their little kid to spend a day with us at the lake with a cook out and what not. Later in the day wife said lets go for a boat ride.
I said it's a little rough out but should be okay.
Heading out wife friend wanted to go see the bat cave(It's a endangered gray bat sanctuary cave at water level.) Heading out of the protected cove the lake had 2 1/2 foot waves but not too bad the pontoon was handling them good. We cross the lake after getting a little spray over the front making the riders giggle. Everyone was on the front two benches(My wife my two girls on the left side and her friends and little boy on the left side with myself only in the back. I told my wife some needs to move to the back as the front of the pontoon was plowing. She said nobody wants to ride in the back and the two women giggled. I roll my eyes and continue knowing that someone it going to get wet.

Getting close to the main channel there was a one of those huge yachts coming from my starboard running wide open making huge wake, As I was angling toward his direction. I ease up on the throttle and I yell to wife to get ready for some big waves and she waves at me with a whatever hand motion. I point the pontoon into the incoming wake and I brace for big splash :D. On the first roll the front of the pontoon rides up and over and rides down and as soon as the toons hit the bottom of the first wave the second roll engulfs the entire front of the deck rolls over the fence and soaks the bench warmers completely. All I hear is cold water gasps and yelling.. I couldn't help myself and I started laughing and I couldn't stop. I put boat in neutral and everyone is looking at me from the back of the boat as I am busting at the seams. Their kid is screaming bloody murder and wife is looking at me with her pizzed look and my oldest daughter yelling at me telling me it's not funny and my youngest is trying to get between me and the helm.
That trip was cut short and I had to putt putt back to the boat slip because they were cold. The adults put on life jackets to try to stay warm. Wife tells me it was my fault because I didn't tell them that could have had happened. I didn't argue I just laughed, And I'm still laughing today. Something about the look of cold water shock and I told you so is funny.

Had a friend's wife do the same thing to me!

I told her "there's a big wave coming, you should not be sitting in the front "v" part of the bow rider. Sure enough wave comes over the front soaking her!! She was not a happy camper for the next 15 mins. Oh well shoulda listened to the Capt.

Re: Move to the back

One sunny day coming into the Jupiter Inlet on a friends boat, we torpedoed a wave which sent my wife into the water (in the middle of the inlet). Now, when I say move, she moves fast without saying a word. (she insists on riding in the back when we head for the inlet).

dooma_Flatchy,

What part of N Alabama? Many years ago I pushed barges out of the Port of Florence.

When I'm operating a boat, any boat, I tell people what to do. I don't care if it hurts their feelings or they think that I'm being mean. I will go back to the dock and they can get off if they don't like it.

Remember that you are responsible for the safety of your passengers. If you see that people need to move then make it happen regardless of the dirty looks.

I've dealt with a lot of passengers, like 2,000/day, and your bound to make a few mad. But I really don't care if they are not happy, they usually get over it quickly whereas if they got hurt or soaking wet it would have been my butt on the carpet.

Also, I hate drunks on my boat, I carried a pair of handcuffs in one coat pocket and a stun gun in the other. Never had to use the stun gun but the cuffs got frequent use as well as "house arrest".

Am I confused or did you take them out without PFDs? Now that IS a stupid human trick.
I took this as donning the life jackets while enroute back to the ramp. Nothing to require that they have them on beforehand, just that the jackets be on board and available.

NO, The Kids were sporting PFD's the 3 adults put theirs on after getting drenched for insulation. I have 18 PFD's on my boat, My boat can have 14 riders I have extra for different sizes and shapes.

Re: Move to the back

recently after I was "given the look" and worse when my darling wife was sprayed, I had to tell her this point blank: no boat driver intends to get his boat (and passengers) wet and when it happens it is unpreventable and unpredicted, so there is no call for blaming the driver. I realized that it would be prudent to tell all passengers this before embarking, when spray is likely to occur--and be sure they have full attention and eye contact. Then, instead of "sorry" you say "told ya."

Now, a good driver will know how to minimize spray, and recurring spray means either the driver doesn't know how to prevent it or the conditions make it unavoidable. Again, the passengers could be apprised that the driver cannot avoid the condition, and that some people pay extra for it!

I'm talking here about annoyances; it is my duty to move people for either safety or performance, or if their position is causing excess spray, etc.

You bet!!!

The owner of the boat tried it on one of the deckhands, knocked him out of the chair. The guy quit the job and walked off the boat as soon as he got up off the floor.

The "house arrest" was remaining in the captain's office in the back of the wheelhouse. Several times I've called the police and had them take the passenger(s) off the boat as soon as we hit the dock. Never pressed any charges, just glad to be rid of them. Police usually escorted them to a cab.

Ever hear of Arab? Just west of Lake Guntersville.
Been there many years ago, 1992? Did a two day trip to Guntersville on the Alabama Princess when she was cut apart and hauled to Gadsden by truck. Under the Hwy 79 bridge and hard to starboard, Southtown.

Ever hear of the SCITANIC?

Wasn't that the paddle boat that was destroyed by a storm that killed a dozen or so people? I was just about out of high school at that time.

Re: Move to the back

That's right, the Scitanic was hit by a thunderstorm micro burst and capsized in the Tn river near Huntsville on July 7, 1984 killing 11 passengers. The crew and four passengers survived.

I mentioned this accident because one of the guys at on the dock at Southtown told me that he had been the captain on the Scitanic when this accident happened.

Meanwhile back at the farm;
Be careful out there with your family and friends, don't let a few dirty looks affect your good judgement. If you perceive that the current conditions might be causing a concern then act on it before that concern becomes a major problem. An ounce of prevention...

And if it sounds like I'm preaching....I am!!!
