Is a Merc 305 5.0 a good engine?

I am looking at a 1990 RInker with the above listed engine. I will check compression and run it but generally are these decent engines? It's got about 300 hours on it.

Its a smaller displacement 350. Nothing wrong with them, almost entirely the same parts as a 350 and they are just as durable.

Just to let you know i bought a 1979 larson with the same motor in it, and with regular maintenance and all of the normal up keep of the motor, it has been a great motor and still runs very strong for being 30 yrs old.

I have been very happy with the motor so far.

Ayuh,... It's a SBC,... The Only thing Better is,.. A Bigger SBC....

What kind of compression should I be looking for on one of these? I know the 10-15% rule.
