.............has the 2-stroke outboard motor got to live? I think they, like the air-cooled Harleys, are short-timing IMHO.
Just curious what y'all think about it.

Re: How much longer.............

Since the newer 2 strokes are precision tuned to the "nth" degree they have taken the ka-bosh off them. The Evinrude V tech for example has less emissions than a 4 stroker. Merc has matched one up they say is better than the V tech. Will 2 stroke outboards ever go away? I don't think so. I do think they will mandate an "end date" to the use of the old ones that smoke and guzzle. Frankly, they should...

Then I think we should all go and park our old boats on some senator's front lawn. If they want to ban the manufacture of old technology carbed 2 strokes fine. But immediately rendering worthless a large portion of existing boats would be a bit extreme.

Re: How much longer.............

I have mixed feelings on the issue. There's a certain amount of guilt every time I put another 20 L of gasoline and 400 mL of oil into my boat, knowing that 1/4 to 1/3 of it will go straight through the motor unchanged and the rest won't exactly be quantitatively converted into carbon dioxide and water vapor. On the other hand, the cost of a new outboard is nearly 10 times what I paid for my old boat, motor and trailer and well out of my price range.

I agree, it would also be unenforceable. I would think about buying a new outboard it the government did a cash for clunkers deal and gave me $4500 for my 74 Evinrude 115

air cooled harleys aren't going anywhere:mad:. Liquid cooled? well......

2 strokers will evolve. not old ones, new ones maybe. unenforcable is about accurate. there has been a lot of chatter on this lately.

I am all for turning in my old johnny on a brand new rudey. Just as soon as we get the 4500.00 cash for clunkers on it. Come to think of it there is a 90 HP at the local dealer that would only be 900.00 out of pocket at that rate.

I think they will be sent the way of the dodo bird just because they have a bad rap from years past. Soem senator will push to get them banned in all of the US just to make seom friends in the EPA, having nothing to do with actual facts... just like nearly all new laws.

I don't see them banned old ones, though. Heck, you can still run a model T on public roads, why not an old evinrude on public waters?
