I was directly to this page for my question...

My husband and I are considering buying my neighbor's boat. We live in Coastal Georgia, therefore, it would be used for salt water fishing, crabbing, etc. The boat was purchased new in 2001 buy an owner in Fla. He had it for about nine months, and he purchased something larger. My neighbor purchased it in 2002, and since then he has used it about a total of 10 times. He has kept it very well maintained. The boat has a 125 HP Mercury Motor. He is asking $6,500 for boat, motor and trailer. It is in excellent condition. My neighbor took us out in it yesterday with my husband at the wheel. He said it was a little rough, but adjusting the trim, etc seemed to even out the ride.

We have never owned a boat, although we are not new to boats. I was wondering what you "experts" thoughts about the type of boat as well as the price.

I understand that Trophy may not have the best reputation. What gives this particular boat a bad reputation...poor construction, rough riding, etc?

Thanks so much for your feedback!!

Trophy's aren't bad boats. Definitely on the low end but nothing particularly wrong with them. They were usually sold with Force outboards which can be difficult to find parts for but the one you're looking at must be just new enough to have a Merc instead. A 125 should be great power for a 17'. I think $6500 is a bit high in this economy for a low-end brand boat. I'd like to see closer to $5000. However if the boat is immaculate and you know it's history it may be worth paying a little extra. I don't think you'd be getting ripped at even $6500.
