nothing to prop

I have a 2000 70 hp Evinrude, ran aground at speed a few nights ago. Engine ran fine to the launch, but noticed when trailering that the engine would not go into reverse, in fact it shifted back into forward when I tried to reverse. I put it on the trailer, brought it home, and took a look at it today. Engine runs fine, but nothing happens at the prop for forward or reverse. I shut the engine off and could spin the prop by hand and could hear and feel the vertical shaft movement in the part of the engine above the foot. I checked the linkage and everything looks fine. Are there shear pins involved that may have sheared or am I in for a major repair? Anything else I should do before taking it to the repair shop?

Re: nothing to prop

check for a spun prop.
take a permanent marker, draw a straight line, to match cotter pin. like the picture. take the boat for a spin, make it do what it is doing. if the lines are still line up, it is not the prop, if misaligned, the hub in the prop has slipped, and need to have a new hub installed by a prop shop, or a new prop.

Re: nothing to prop

Nothing at all happens when I put it in gear in the driveway (hose on, engine running), either forward or reverse, no prop movement whatsoever. I checked the linkage on the engine again and it is apparently shifting there but still nothing. Are there clutches involved or am I possibly looking at a broken shaft?

Possible broken driveshaft, propshaft and an number of other internal gearcase possibilities ... look up your motor on BRP website, 'engine diagrams' which will detail all parts involved. I would start by dropping the LU to see if the driveshaft is broken.
