Hello all..... I just installed a new impeller, gaskets, thermostat ect, still not getting water up to the powerhead. Checked for blockage, none. The motor is a 1977 70 hp evinrude.

One thing I noticed, the new seal that goes on the top of the housing around the driveshaft, does not contact the driveshaft itself (1/8" play). Triple checked the part numbers, and this is the seal it calls for, but I think that is where I am loosing my water as the midsection seems to fill up with water. Any help on this one would be appreciated.

If you are speaking of the o-ring in the kit, that is for the top of the driveshaft, just under the splines - to keep water out.

Water in the midsection while running is normal - cools the exhaust and muffles sound.

when you installed did you make sure it was going in the proper direction. you need to have it so that the impeller spins clockwise with the rotation of the drive shaft. one other thing to look for is the key that goes in the impeller to lock it to the driveshaft. if that is out of place or missing there will be no spin on the impeller wich in turn will not pull any water.

Are you talking about the grommet (0315748 [0341732]) ... or the O-ring (0553127 [0326649])?

Check out ... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=107748 ... it might help.

I was refering to the grommet that sits on top of the water pump housing. I am wondering if this should be tight to the driveshaft (which it is not) or if the space is normal.

Normal.

About half the time on this forum, guys are trying ot a new impeller while running in a bucket or on muffs without being sure that the water pump is actually filled with water. If you run in a bucket, the water must cover the actual water pump, not the intake- the pump itself. In either case, the air bleed hole at the inside top of the housing needs to be clear.
