I have a 1978 Johnson 150. I am tired of mixing fuel, so I am looking to find an aftermarket oil pump kit for this motor. I have heard they exist but can't seem to find any info. Any suggestions of where I might find any info on this.

Thanks

Just use the pump from a 85-90 150. Get the 4 wire pump kit. Insure alarm system is working. You need alarm horn with self test logic on back side of horn. After system is installed you should have 4 alarm sounds, one for no oil, one for low oil, one for overheat, and one for fuel restriction. You may need to splice the pump wires into the engine harnes.

the 1978 did not have the mixing system, if you decide to do this. besure to get a OMS pump, not a VRO pump. you will have a problem finding space to mount it. and i am not sure you have enough pulse to operate it.

The VRO/OMS pump will work fine, Cost of parts to high for this old of engine. Plenty of pulse.

In addition to the VRO/OMS pump (~$300 online sellers) and the tank (~$50 ebay including hose and wires), what else would he need? I'm not arguing whether it's worth it (only he can decide), just wondering if there's anything else - like the vacuum switch for the fuel restriction alarm or any other wiring harnesses. I just spent the above money to update my VRO to OMS and a newer tank on a 19 year old engine and I thought it was worth it, but mixing is kind of a hassle with the onboard tanks I have. I didn't need anything else and the installation is not tough.

So it sounds like I could make this work for under $400.00. I just need a list of what parts I need and I might consider this. Mixing on my boat is a pain.

Hopefully someone will chime in with definitive advice about parts, but this is kind of the "go to" article on VRO/OMS systems:

Other than the tank and the pump, I'm just wondering how you would carry the "no oil" and "low oil" signal up to the control box horn. Maybe the article addresses it, look for information on how to adapt mid-80s systems that did not have warning horns for the oiling system.

Single tan wire in harness, you have use the alarm horn that has the logic buildt in. If you use late model tach with logic, you will need to string 3 more tan wires, ID with colored stripe. Tank sender must match which horn you use. Fuel restriction switch has bearing on the pump.

Check the 1983 accessories cat, and look at pn 0174046 econoomixer, this may be the best if you can find one, its a first cousin to the VRO.

There was an electrical pump made for the Mercs to replace the OEM pump, when the plastic gear inside the engine broke. After market, can`t remember who made the pump.
