I just replaced the two oil seals and O ring in the lower housing. What is the proper way to reinstall the prop drive. I took it out in neutral, replaced seals, and reinstalled. Now, when shifter is in reverse, I get neutral and when shifter is in neutral and forward position, i get forward. What did I do? Thanks

HI,

You missed the shift shat spline engaugement boy a slpine.
Drop it down and realign th shift shaft and put it bace together again.
As always before you bolt it up completely shift the engine to make sure you have all the gears. Then finish the job.

Thanks Chief, I'm not quite following you but I will look it over again. The only thing I'm seeing when I drop the shaft back in, is the cam that moves when I shift. It doesn't look like it moves all the way around, if its suppose to.

Recommend any manuals?

Re: Installing 90hp OB prop drive.

Hi,

I am thinking that the upper shift shaft was under a little load when you dropped the lower unit. So the upper shift shaft moved one spline when it was unloaded. Then when you installed the LU it went in to the wrong spline engagement so you would not have both gears. You can get neutral and forward or neutral and reverse depending on which way the shaft is engaged. I usually install the LU with it in forward gear and the engine in forward gear, but have done lots in the neutral position. You just have to make sure the engine shift shaft is in the correct position with the LU shift shaft spline and you will have both gears.

Well still not having any luck. Can't find a way to adjust the engine shift shaft to the correct position. Is this what I am looking at straight down the LU where the prop gear goes. Looks like some type of lobe that moves with the gear shift. It will only move to the left, which seems to be forward, and to center which seems to be neutral. The gear shift in Reverse is the only way to put this in the neutral position. I really want to fix this myself. Any way we could IM or I call when I'm ready to work on this again?
Thanks

Hi

You can adjust the position of the upper **** shaft with the control box. You can also remove the shift cable from the engine and move it by hand to align it while putting the LU on the mid housning. I would shift the lower unit into neutral and then just ease it into forward gear. Then with the upper shaft shifted into forward gear look at the spline in the mid housning and the lower unit to make sure they will mate up and align in the correct spline (slots) for
proper shifting.
