Paint and primer questions

1. Is the rust oleum everyone is using the oil based enamel?

2. Rustoleum has 2 primers. A spray bomb called cold galvenizing that the label says is 93% zinc when dry. The other is brush that is a latex but says it's for aluminum. Can you put enamel over latex. Will either of these work or should I just stick with the self ecthing stuff you get at the auto parts store?

Zinc chromate primer will take an enamel pretty well.

I have used the latex aluminum primer with enamel spray paint, it seems to do ok.

I haven't tried the cold galvanizing spray because it says in the fine print for it "if you overcoat use latex".

I'd like to find a cold galvanizing spray that can work with acrylic enamel myself.

Lion Hunter I got my Zinc in spray cans from NAPA my primer is the Latex aluminum primer in Quarts and then I have Sunrise Red in quarts Oil based enamel. I am still in the painting process but the sides have been painted for at least a week with no problems one side I think is into 2 weeks no bubbling peeling flaking and the finish looks great .

Thanks Rick, I'm following your restore ang getting the ideas from you. How much paint did you end up needing?

I picked up 4 cans of Zinc from Napa . I picked up 4 quarts of primer , 4 quarts of red and 4 quarts of white . With what is painted so far 4 coats of primer on the sides almost 1 quart, 3 coats of red on the sides about 1 quart so far . I have used 2 cans of zinc and will probably need one or 2 mmore than I originally got .

Mind you my boat is 16' and I just almost emptied my 4th can of zinc so I will need 1 or 2 more . I am done with the outer hull as far as zinc but I still have the cap to paint and inside the bow.
