I have model 25924 big twin. It was missing the airbox when i got it. I purchased one but the carb needles are to short to stickout beyond the airbox much less the engine cover and the manual choke lever had to be "modified" also the starter bracket needed modification to to allow room for the airbox. This airbox is suposed to have come off the same model of evinrude. Was different carbs used on this model? Is there extenders I could get for the adjusting needles?

This is 30 hp silencer--is it what you have? My best guess is that somebody has swapped carburetors. Possibly has installed a 40hp carb to try to boost power??? Hey, maybe the whole powerhead?? You probably can put the 30 hp needles in the carburetor.

As FR said, carb needles were shorter on later model carbs. A pix of your carb, silencer would help figure it out.

The silencer is what I had missing. The one pictured is the one I purchased. I do have short needles. the air box "silencer" fit the carb ok except the short needles abnd the manual choke lever. I went back to the guy who I bought the silencer from and bought the carb that it came off of. It has the longer needles, choke pull and even the knobs for the needles. The carb needs a rebuild kit he said. I hope I can just swap the needles and choke arm because my carb works great. The only thing I need to locate now is the starbord side from engine cover mount. There is nothing inside to receive the forward cover screw. The hook clips (fore & aft) on the port side of the clam shell cover has lost the hook piece. They look easy to manufacture so I will try that if I cant find a cheap and quick source for replacements. Where can I find a picture of the starbord side of the motor with the cover removed? I need to see what the forward cover mount looked like and how it attached.

I know this is a lot but I want to try and get this in the lake next weekend.

I scanned and saved a non-factory service manual for 30-40HP outboard motors built by OMC from 1956-1964. If you would like a copy, send me a Private Message with your email address and I will reply with the manual attached. Good luck!

Front mount is just like the rear one except it is offset to the rear.

Well well this picture does not match my starter bracket. mine has 3 mounting holses on the starbord side in big screw above the carb There is no hole to mount this cover mount as pictured. I am told my model # 25924 I need to re verify the engine model identification

25924 is a '56 E30.

Here's a pic of the '56 Johnson 30. Should be very similar if not the same.

Someone probaby replaced the starter and bracket on yours. Post a pix, I have a couple of old, toasted starters and brackets laying around the shop...I check your pix against what I have.

If I am correct, that model number is for a manual start motor. If it is electric start, somebody probably grafted on one from a newer motor. It might have a bracket that came off the same motor as that carburetor did. After 1959 they did not need the hood mount hole because they had a lift-off fiberglass hood.

Bingo...someone put a later Johnson big twin starter on your Lark. If you really have to have the fixture for the cowl screw, you need the shorter E-rude starter with period-correct bracket with cowl fixture. I have a 56 Lark with the larger J-son starter, too. Better starter in my opinion. If you can fix the front and rear hooks on the catches/closures, just use those and the rear starboard cowl screw/fixuture...your cowl will stay put.

Can you tell if the carb is the right one. It has the real short needles they barely stick out from the carb. The bottom high speed needle is rather blunt. I have found and bought the carb that came with the silencer it has the long needles and the knobs plus the choke lever. Would these fit this carb do you think. The carb I purchased needs rebuilt. The one I am running doesnt. I expect to recieve the carb Wednesday. I think I also need a prop shaft seal are these hard to come by?

The carburetor has the integral filter bowl, so it probably is correct. I have no idea how it got short needles in it, but no matter the long ones probably will fit right in. Seals are no problem. Get 'em here at iboats.

Does it run ok? The fuel pump is upside down. They aren't supposed to work that way. But a bumblebee isn't supposed to be able to fly either.

Re: 56 Evinrude 30 hp assembly info

it runs ok prone to runaway at half throttle The vacume kill switch dosen't seem to be working. I popped the flywheel off and connected a wire to the other set of points and when you short the two sets of points together it kills the engine. The ignition switch on the boat when in the off position connects 2 terminals together so I am running these two wires to those 2 terminals so I can kill both magnetos with the key switch. This fuel pump was on it when I got it. I havent gotten a battery for this boat yet so I havent tested the starter. the engine pull starts on the 1st or 2nd pull if it has been running already and 3 or 4th pull if it has been sitting more than a day.

F R is the expert, not me, and he has already flagged your fuel pump. In addition to his observation of it being "upside down", I believe it is also a much later model, maybe even 1970's. I think that style is better and not a problem until you need parts to rebuild it. Hang in there, you can whip it!
