this thing has got me really confused and frustrated. I am fairly new at the outboard repair game, but even with the shop manual things arent going as planned..... replaced flywheel, coils, spark plugs, rebuilt carb, impeller, and starter. in test tank motor runs fine but the past 2 times i took it to the lake I had to row back (heavy boat + heavy motor = not a fun time) the motor seems to run ok for the first 5 minutes then shuts down and wont restart. drained the battery both times trying to get it relit. can anyone please give me a little direction on this?

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any boating problem. You are a little below the radar because you posted your thread in "Other Outboard Brands" instead of the J&E Forum. Maybe one of the forum moderators will move your thread to that forum. If not, post it again for all the JohnnyRude members to see. Good luck!

Check spark once it shuts down. Are the plugs wet? Did you change the plug wires? Usually if it fails once warmed up it is a bad coil. If you didn't change the wires, could be an old one arcing and causing loss of spark.

If your grinding her till the battery quits you may lose the starter next.
Did you change the impeller? Does water come out the relief hole part way up the leg? Is the tank building pressure?
Check for spark when she quits.Describe how it quits.Does it turn off like a switch or gradually fade to a stall.Does a little choke help it stay running,Does pushing the promer button help?
