I had the Imperial up to the lake today and ran into some problems. First off, like a dip**** I forgot to pump the bulb when checking the motor on muffs, and ran it out of gas. Once I got it all primed again, all was well, or so I thought. Once at the lake, I had issues starting, and once I did, and we took off across the lake, we got about 2 minutes out of the motor and it died on us. Took forever to re-prime everything and get started up again. How hard is it to get all of the air out of the system once it is introduced. With the electric primer solenoid there are a lot of tiny lines that can hold air. What would cause it to lose power and die out at full throttle? I have consulted the manual, and it was less than helpful at troubleshooting procedures.

A little side info though

Plugs are brand new champions
Pee hole line was cracked, introducing some water into housing (possible short outs?)
Amateur wiring done on some of the coils (insulation breakdown causing bare spots)

All defects that I have seen have been repaired, but I want to try and avoid ANOTHER wasted trip to the lake to test.

What did the fuel hose primer bulb look like when the engine ran out of gas? Was it round or collapsed flat? Once you got the engine refired, did it run ok the rest of the trip?

primer bulb looked normal. Once we had "issues" the wife insisted on a return home (the baby doesnt like problems) it was on the return to the dock that it started surging on me at WOT. I havent had any issues on muffs, but that is not a real good indication I know

Surging at full throttle can be an indication that you have a weak fuel pump. It supplies some fuel, but not enough to sustain high speed running.

that is what I was thinking as well, but before I replaced the pump, I wanted to see about it being airbound. Cheap fixes are good fixes, but it looks like I may need a pump

I just rebuilt the fuel pump on my 70 hp merc, the parts were 3 dollars at the marina,I was shocked nothing is that cheap there. It took 15 minutes to change parts in and is good as new.
