Hello All,

This is my first post, I have a Mercruiser 3.0. The boat was given to me after a few years of no use. At first the Engine was frozen, I removed the Plugs put some mystery Oil on top of the Pistons and got it to spin after sitting for a while. All the oil has spit out of where the spark plugs come from. We replaced all the plugs and the wires and distributor cap. The starter is spinning and then replaced the fuel pump. We are now getting gas to the carb and it looks as if gas is getting into the engine. If we turn the Key the engine sounds like it starting up and first we had allot of black smoke. But as soon as I release the key or the starter disengages the engine dies.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for you help and time.

Did you change the points and condensor inside the distributor? Also, do a compression check on all 4 cylinders. Carb may also need a cleaning and fresh gaskets...

Hello,

Thanks for the response, Yes I changed the points and condensers. Also had the carburetor rebuilt but I am unsure if it is working properly. I will try and rent a compression unit to test that out,

Thanks again for the response..

Sounds like your not getting enough fuel to the engine from the carb. Did you have the carb rebuild by a tech or did you do it?
