I downloaded service manual 6 but it only tells me how to adjust it, tried that still trips cut out switch, I hate to pull off outdrive, just had it off last year, and its heavy, if I have to do this ok ,anyway would like some info on how to replace this cable. You probably should replace the Bellows while you have it appart...

No amount of adjustment will fix a worn out cable....
Check the bellows as well as Bondo suggested....
It is the next step past the cable replacement & if done at the same time will give you a good 5+ years of not worrying about it....;)

thanks, I have just seen a site http;//www.boatfix.com/merc/Servman/14/14a4.pdf that shows the cable removing for the outdive and everthing , also went on other sits and found people having problems removing bellows and stuf I kept the info on faviorates in case I have same problems, I guess I,m removing the stern , did it before last year when replacing waterpump and greasing ujoints , I will be working on this next week , found a kit at the local boat place for $70, will pick that up monday, thanks for your responses will do a follow up when done, Bruce

Section 4A of service manual 6 gives the information for your drive, that link you gave is for a Gen II drive (manual #14) and you don't have a Gen II.

thank you , Don yes you are right , I have a gen 1 and I should have looked at that page more to see that, I downloaded the service 4a and saw what is involved, I would like to know , just for the heck of it, how long do you think I will spend on replacing this cable, the hard part seems to be rethreading some passage that the cable goes thru, besides getting some special tools, I want to replace the bellows , that makes sense, Bruce

Just long enought to finish the job.
Don't try setting limits for the job. It may take you a weekend, or you may get it done in a couple of hours. Depends on your abilities, and the condition of everything around it.
Take your time and do it right the first time.

I remember seeing that somewhere
