Making a test barrel

Any good ideas on size, etc of barrel or trash can to use for testing a motor? I have a 1976 75hp stinger, that I am going to need to work on. I ran it for the first time yesterday. It ran great for a couple of minutes, then started bogging down and stalling when I opened up the throttle. It starts fine and will throttle up in neutral, but in gear it bogs down. After reading several posts on here, it looks like I need to go through the fuel system.

Can the prop be removed when testing in a barrel? Is it possible that something is hanging up in the drive that is causing the motor to bog down and stall? It acts like a stick shift car when you let out the clutch while holding the brake. I can back off the throttle and it keeps running.

No advantage over a hose, unless you make a really big test tank, with baffles, etc. For a 75HP motor, I would expect the tank to need to be 8 ft long or more, from what I've seen dealer use. BTW, running your motor w/o a prop or on the hose doesn't tell much. The motor must be under load (in gear, prop on) to tell very much.

use muffs, just for getting it running correctly. even with a big tank, you would need a test wheel. the motor could also overheat quickly in a barrel.

Re: Making a test barrel

Hello - I'm completely new to all this... just recently picked up a small 15' runabout with an Evinrude Lark IV 40HP - apparently hasnt been run for a while but want to test, clean, tune 'er up... So what is the best way to test out of water? I have an above ground pool.. probably not a good idea though huh? What is this about using a hose???
Thanks - again, I am completely new, so please pardon my ignorance.

Knotty1 , sorry but you motor will not work with muffs, you have to use a barrel or tank. pool not good idea, unless you like oil scum on the surface.

Thanks. I'll stick with the muffs. What about my question concerning something in the lower end/drive hanging up and causing it to bog down? The way it stalls it feels like a car when you let out the clutch with the brake on.
I'm putting a new water pump in it this week, will remove and clean the carbs, check all fuel lines and any vacuum, and wait for my manual to arrive.
Thanks again,
Dean
