I have a 2003 volvo penta 5.0 carburated engine with a VP outdrive. I have just cracked a head from overheating due to a bad RWP less with than 80 hrs on the engine. Is there a chevy head that would fit and what gaskit would i use to put it all back togather. And what's up with the crazy allen head for the distributor mount. I'm familiar with rebuilding the small block but this one had a made in mexico stamp in the casting.

Is it a Vortec engine?

Either way you have a lot of options. A head is a head marine or not. Some say the gasket needs to be marine, but I don't think that is the case. What is the head casting number under the valve cover?

The term is Vortec, and it doesn't appear anywhere on the head or the motor. But you have a Vortec engine, if your engine is truly a 2003. Any Vortec head will work. Kalina Machine Shop in Peoria sold me a reconditioned 5.7 head, 4 years ago, for $179.
There is FelPro gasket that works well. If you search on here, i think you'll find someone describing it or listing it's part number.

12558059 is a 305 (5.0) Vortec head.

Do not use a 5.7 Vortec head. While it will work just fine you will loose power because the chambers are larger which mean you will get less compression.

Any 5.0 Vortec head will work.

What is the cc of the 5.0. I built a big block by the book and found some of the cc in the 049 head were published wrong. I can do the math on the compression but were ther that many cc differances in 2003 and did chev have a 2003 models with a 5.0?

Re: 2003 Volvo Penta 5.0 Head Swap

No Chevrolet road vehicles got 5.0s in 2003. (or 5.7s) The motor is made strictly for crate and marine use only (same for the 5.7). When I needed my 5.7 head, both places I called acted as if there was only one possible 5.7 head. When I told them it was a marine engine, they both said, "that doesn't matter, they're all the same". So I'll guess it's the same for a 5.0. Just call a place that does machine/engine work, something tells me they'll know right away what you need.

I've had good success getting rebuilt heads off of ebay.

Thanks for your inputs. I will call the machine shop and do more research.
