Was attempting to put new water pump impeller on the old merc today, but ran into a problem trying to disconnect the shift lever coupler located in the bottom cowling behind the carburator. feels like the shift rod has a bend at the very top and is held to lever with a washer. no way to get to it that i could see. Obviously I'm missing something as this is the first time i've attempted this. Any merc savvy people out there with a little advice?
If you help me solve this I will forever be you buddy. I was told that dropping the lower unit was a fairly simple job. I'm feeling fairly stupid right now cuz I can't figure it out on my own!
1985 merc 25hp tiller ser.#0g207386
originally sold as a jet(sea-pro) maybe, but has a prop now.
Amillion thanks-Hophead

i had a 25 some years ago and i believe that their is nut that needs to be removed from under the anticavitation plate and that washer, it is free floating, but don't loose it...needs to be reinstalled.

thanks for the reply; no nut under cavitation plate though other than mounting bolts(4ea) I bought a SELOC repair manual the other day and it shows the unit your referring to but the only thing it says about mine is to"Remove the shaft lever coupler located in the bottom cowling , behind the carborator"! easier said than done. I took the linkage arm off and tried to wiggle it around to see if that helped; but no luck! Manual is proving to be more confusing than helpful- thanks again---Hophead

When i took mine off, 85 mariner 25 horse, i had to take off the lower 2 cowl pieces to gain access to the top of the shift rod.

Thanks I'll give that a look see- and that bent rod I talked about is some kin of travel limiter attached to the outside of shift rod--Jim

Thanks but I'm a confused as to how you get the lower cowling off. I removed four bolts and dropped a metal cowling piece and removed a small section off the starboard side(with rubber plug)- do I need to remove the choke knob and other stuff on the front to remove the cowling piece? Man, sombody told me that changing the water pump was a piece of cake! I feel like in disassembling a seven coarse meal! Any further hints would be greatly apreciated- Chinook season closes in two weeks!!! Jim

You need to remove the clips that hold the upper cowling on, parts 10 and 12 in the following link. Also part 15. They hold the two pieces together, and even then its kind of tricky to get the two pieces out. Also, you may have to remove the fuel line where it bolts to the lower cowl. It really is not too tough, should not take more than 5 mins. Let me know if you are still stuck, I can take some pics of mine when I get home tomorrow.

Ps. you shouldnt have to remove the choke knob assembly.

Just checked it out and I think yours and mine are a little different- maybe alot -could not find anything like your drawings on my motor!
Can you recommend a good service manual for this engine? I bought a manual from SELOC and it has proved to be a big waste of money.
Thanks again Jim Ser # for this beast is 0g207380. it comes up as a sea pro 15 jet on merc website but their drawings are accurate as far as the motor and linkage are concerned- no cowling info though. if you get rally bored and have no girlfriend, take alooksee and give me your thoughts. I have the original temporary registration card from this thing but the numbers don't jive with anything mercury has. Enough blither-have yourself a great weekend-- Jim

Damn, sorry I couldn't help ya. I wasted my money on a SELOC manual too. They sure do suck.

Thanks for your help anyways, I went to the local merc shop yesterday and the kid at the service dest sort of walked me through the procedure. The key thing is a pair of long needle nose pliars or a pair of medical forceps to reach under the engine to the retainer plate(clip). Then rotate up and pull off. The only thing to move out of the way electical gizmo-bob on port side.
I'll let you know how putting it back togather goes! Jim
