I just recently purchased a 9.8 Merc reall cheap its a 1960 model#1548313, my problem with the motor is there is a ground wire hanging loose in there that I have no idea where it goes. Also when you go to move the lever to close the carb it hits on something in the inside of the motor. Also the the accelarator handle turns all the way around. Is this motor fixable or should I get rid of it? I desperately need help with this one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

No matter what, if the compressions are no good then you are wasting your efforts. Do a compression test first.

ok first off all i see the wire, but where is it coming from? is it coming from the stop button? and where is the throttle grip twister not engaging? is it at the 90 of the tiller or up to the throttle arm under the hood?

ok if thats coming from the stop button, it needs to be grounded, the third picture you posted if you look carefully just about 3/4 of an inch to the RIGHT of the ground wire it appears to be a threaded mount where the wire used to go, find a screw with the same threads and secure.

First, with that serial number it is a 1962, which is the same motor that I have. :)

Second, it looks like it should be grounded on the fuel adapter screw. See the pic.

Third, let me know if you want to sell it if you don't want to repair it :D Many parts are no longer available (NLA) so be prepared to make it a project and hunt for your parts.

The tiller just turns all the way around and does not turn the gear at all, I am thinking of sellin the motor. I will let you guys know tomorrow I am taking the motor to a mechanic to see what the deal is. Could someone take a picture of where that wire is supposed to be grounded? Thanks

Look at my photo where the wire is attached to the screw that holds the fuel line adapter (the metal nipple that goes through the case). That should be the spot.

make sure you have that stop ground wire grounded well, it needs to be grounded for the ignition system to function

Its not engaging under the hood. What could be the problem?
