I am a new to bass boats and their motors havent taken it out yet but listened to the engine run and to me it sounds fine. ive been around cars and plane maintenance all my life. the previous owner said that type of engine had overheating problems. he said his never overheated but to prevent the problem he ran 40 to 1 in them and never had a problem it does smoke some at idle. can this hurt the engine. anyone know why they may over heat and this fix the problem. and anyother info for a new to boats and outboard motor guy i would appreciate it. preventative maintenance the poss overheating prob
thanks

The PO is either ignorant or trying to confuse you. A 40::1 fuel mix will not cure overheating.

If you like the motor, buy it and a service manual. Change the waterpump impeller, thermostats and poppit valve. Run it at 50::1.

The 40 to 1 would cause more heat due to less oil = more friction. Do as told above. Also while you have everything apart stick a water hose over the water tube and flush out the motor. This may clear any blockages you may have. Check the timming, compression and maker sure the plugs are the correct temp. Be smart, get it checked by a good outboard mechanic. You may spend a couple hundred bucks but you may save thousands. 2 strokes are a whole new world not that hard to learn but you need the know how and equipment. Make your new boad a good experience and you'll be hooked.

40:1 contains more oil than 50:1, that being said, I would still look at making sure the cooling system is up to snuff, and run 50:1
