WIfe and I went to launch our boat Saturday. There was a relativly new Four Winns bowrider about 35ft out from the ramp with the lid up and the guy on it was crawling around the engine compartment. We launch our boat and I'm idleing around putting the fenders out waiting on wife to park truck and come down to the dock. Guy hollers at me and asks if I know how to start his boat. I asked him what engine he had and if it was carbed or FI. Guy says it's a 3.0 with carb and "they" (I guess the people he bought the boat off of) told him he needed to prime the engine before it would start. I told him to pump the throttle a couple of times. He did so and boat started when he hit key. He says thanks and lays in the throttle. That's when I notice his outdrive is still up in the trailer position. I just shake my head and pick up wife at dock and go on my merry way.

be a little kind, carbureted cars are all classified as antiques now. so anyone new to boating probably just doesn't relate to priming the carb to start the engine anymore. like do you know how to use a slide rule?

Yep, put it in neutral, wait for the current to get you going good, throw it in gear.:D

Seriously though, every boat has some kind of quirk to start it. If he was new to boating and only went out once or twice with the sellers, he probably did not catch on. Just yesterday at the launch I had a hard time keeping mine running. Went through the spin dance and everything else until I found the dog had pulled the kill switch to where it was "sort of" on but not really. Had a nice guy ask me if I needed pulled in as I was floating away. That is what being a boater is all about. Helping!

But now the real question...What on earth is a 3.0 carbed or not doing in a 35ft boat???

Never mind, I bet the "they" refers to twins:rolleyes:

He never mentioned the size of the boat. Only that it was 35 ft away from the ramp.

You have to give the guy credit for asking. He could have just taken up space on the launch ramp while he messed with it for an hour or so.
