I was at the state launch this weekend and on saturday when I went up there it was packed boats comming in and out and trailers and trucked parked every where. And the normal 5 people that sit and watch every weekend at the boat luanch. So I wait in line for about 20 mins to put my boat in. Go to back up the trailer when this guy in his boat comes flying in and parks his boat at the dock and said he forgot to put his plug in and runs to get his truck so everyone lets him cuts us off to pull his half flooded boat out. The water was up to the seats. This after he took his boat and the water was draining out he jumped back to the end of the line to put his boat in again. I was like shouldnt this guy let it dry out for a week before he puts it back in he almost lost here everything has to be soaked.
The next day at the same launch there was like 4 people there gettting there boats ready to launch when all of a sudden this guy in his pos come up and starts yelling what are you guys doing launch or move at this point im flipping out because I hate people like this and told him to launch his pos people are getting ready no need to be rude so the guy goes to the launch takes his straps off and puts his boat in and ties up right at the front of the dock so no one else can launch takes his sweet *** time walking back from his truck to get in his boat. I got to launch and pull my boat inchs from his boat waiting for him to move when he says I for got to put the plug in and pull his boat on the concret and drags the whole *** end to pull the boat out. lesson learned take your time.

that is why mine stays in, and the boat has a waterproof cover when not in the water. Always high and dry, bow up. :D

Being rude and stupid at a dock is one thing but I wouldn't call anyone's boat a pos because I've seen pos's pulling in expensive well maintained pos.

I park my boats in a garage and leave the plug in. I am able to avoid this issue. But I am still subject to all the others!

I agree 100%!
I have been towed in by some crafts that I would'nt dream of taking out...but there ya have it, they were'nt the one on the receiving end of the tow rope.

...Anyone who has a boat is just glad to be on the water and for them I am happy. You can't blame the boat because of the operator.

If it floats, runs, and gets you from A to B and back to A, it's all good.

HERE HERE!!!!

I am the proud owner of one of the aforementioned "POS"... but hey its MINE! It works, gets me where I need to go, and keeps the family happy, and it looks better than the tow vehicle does! LOL

I like how there are 5 people who always watch the festivities :p

If I lived closer to a boat launch, I would likely be there with them, hehe. You know.. watching those POS boats get launched by those POS vehicles (just to really offend those not picky enough to keep their boat looking nice, but seemingly picky enough to get offended when others call it a POS).

I would like to offer another possible scenario for you to think about. And NO, I am not trying to be difficult!

Let's just say that, maybe I just got the boat, I'm on a budget, and spent all of my funds getting the engine and electronics working properly. Now, my kids, wife, dog, whomever, want to go out and enjoy the rest of summer.
They can. And they KNOW what their boat looks like and they know what people are thinking. But, it works. Gets them on the water, etc. They do not need reminded what it looks like or what people think. And yes, some of them may take longer getting in and out of the launch area. And also I will give you that some ARE the people who don't care. But I doubt that they are ones who take offense or are even reading this forum.

That being said, I have more respect for the guy who goes out and gets a boat and makes it work so he and his family can experience what the rest of us do, than the guy who lives with mommy and daddy, takes a 12 year loan and buys the biggest shiniest thing he can get his hands on just to say "look at me". And take just as long or longer at the ramp than the guy with the POS.
I will talk to a stranger in an old ugly boat who is happy to be at the sandbar long before I will talk the guy in his big new boat who thinks he deserves to be there.
And for the record, I had two POS's while saving up for seven years to be able to pull my current boat off of the show room floor.

My boats were old, ugly and probably even laughed at from time to time. But they were mine. They ran. And I took care of them whether it showed outright or not.

So please, let's not be so critical of other people and their boat before the whole story is known.
Again, not trying to hijack the thread or start a fight, just speaking up for the little guy, so to speak.

I'm in the POS club. I bought a 25 year old fixer upper. I spent my $$ on getting it to run right. Appearance is next. I get strange looks at the ramp.

Re: Crazy Boat launch weekend.. Funny

While not quite a POS my boat is almost 35 years old, (almost) all original and is showing it's age. The vinyl seats, doghouse, etc. are faded and cracking in places, the inside 'bumper rails' have been pulled off, the plastic edging around the dash/cuddy door etc. is shrunk and pulling away, the gel coat is a little oxidized, etc, etc.

However, the boat is structualy and mechanicaly sound as a pound. No floor/transom soft spots, no leaks, all controls and electrical work just fine and hasn't let us down in on the water YET (Knocking loudly on several pieces of wood!) in the 3 years I've been running it. There have been some expected maintenance issues that have all been taken care of as they appeared while still in the driveway and one bent prop that was easily changed while leaning over the transom (OMC stringers still have their good points! :p ).

My priorities are function over form in most things and this attitude lets me enjoy things I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford if I had to have the newest, shineyest, fastest whatever. Don't judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge a boat or it's owner by how shiney it is. :D

Re: Crazy Boat launch weekend.. Funny

The man who owns the local Coors distribution company( extremley$$$$$$wealthy) has a old POS that he rides around in-fish out of.- If you did not know him you would think he didnt have $2.
There are too many $30,000 a year millionairs in thier big money /big stereo ski boats for me but hey, maybe its thier dad's boat.

Also in 4 years of slip rental I will have spent more $$$ than I did on the boat.
And the in the slip next to me that pays the same and his boat does not even run for 2 years:confused:

Fixing up old boats is a hobby of mine and we use them as I work on them.
My latest projects are a 1961 whitehouse pocket cruiser and a 1973 Glastron Carlson CV-16 s/s.
The wife and I don't care when we get the pos look from other boaters because we know that the following year we will get the "Awesome Boat" looks from the same people.
I have even had people stop me on the water and say "nice job on the boat, I have seen what you did to it"

That makes it all worth it, makes you feel like you have the best craft on the whole lake.

It seems like no matter what ya do someone will say something. 3 guys sitting at the ramp watching. I back in, stop and get out to unhook the wench hook and I hear "hes launching to shallow". Im not gona stand in the water while I unclip the hook. I get back in, back up a lil more, boat floats off the trailer. I pull up some, I hear "wow its hung up" they dont yell it to me just say it to each other. Well its hung up on purpose I am launching alone, it would really suck for my boat to float away I have it tied to my trailer with a long rope. I get out, tie it up and go park the trailer. 1 min tops to launch by myself and I still get comments, like they want you to be a clown or something. They thought I was going to pull the boat back onto the ramp with that long rope and didnt say a word to warn me even

I've never been one to regard esthetics as more important than function in either fishing or hunting boats and vehicles. I'm also one of the "Keep it Simple" crowd.

Don't misunderstand, I don't scorn or criticize anyone who wants the biggest, newest, fastest, most powerful and fanciest equipment on the market. If they like
it, and they can afford it, it's fine with me.

What I have observed is that I seem to catch as many (or sometimes more) fish in my 20 year old, 14 ft., open bow, Mirrocraft with a 1995, 30 horse, tiller operated motor as anyone else on the lake.

I'm sure I've been laughed at and I've certainly been patronized a few times but I don't pay much attention to that. I'm there to enjoy myself, not to worry about what someone else thinks of me or my rig.

The one really great thing about my boat and motor is that they are paid for and have been since I paid cash for them when they were new.

Perhaps to someone else my boat is a POS. To me it's a treasure.

Personally, I would rather hang around a crowd of older, less expensive boats. I refuse to call them POS's, but there are exceptions to every rule. My boat's a 92, and I have just as much fun on this as I would with a brand new one. Only difference: I don't have to stroke a fat check every month. Well, and then there is that old "W" word, gosh, what is it? Warranty? Yeah, sometimes that would be nice. But the people in the brand new boats just baffle me, you should hear them when they spill a drink, or ding a dock, which is bound to happen. Don't get me wrong, I don't abuse my boat, I actually pamper it, but at least I know my boat is done depreciating, and every time they hit the dock, well, knock off another thousand.
