Re: Inline 6 165 Thru Hull Exhaust?
Awhile back I put thru-hull on my old boat. Older motor on a newer outdrive. The exhaust manifold would not match up to the newer drive. I made a blank off plate out of 3/8 aluminum and put it over the hole where the exhaust would enter the outdrive through an exhaust tube. I then had a piece of 2" stainless pipe bent to match up to my engine exhaust manifold thru the hull just below the water line. Drilled a 3" hole thru the transom. Placed the new pipe thru the hole and attached it to the manifold.
I then took a piece of 1/4" stainless and cut a round disc 4 1/4" in diameter. I then found center and cut a hole to go over my newly made pipe. Once it was in place, I marked on the pipe where my flange (stainless disc) would be positioned. I then drilled 5/16" holes symmetrically around the flange in order to bolt it to the tansom. Drill these holes before welding the flange on the pipe. Otherwise it is a pain in the butt to drill holes with the pipe being in the way.
I welded the flange onto the pipe and then installed it. I left 2" sticking out to put on a rubber flapper to prevent water from being pushed into the exhaust while backing.
Even though it was just a 4 cyl, it sounded pretty cool. Sitting still or just idling, it was quiet except for the blurp blurp noise of the exhaust pushing up through the water. Once on plain is when the exhaust would sing nice and loud.
I looked for a kit and other options, but never found anything to help me out. Just used my own ingenuity to build my own. Yes, it can be done if your creative, patient, and have the time. My only scary part was drilling a hole through the transom.
I sold that boat 9 years ago and to my surprise, I saw it out on the lake this past weekend. Funny thing is, I heard it and told my buds that boat sounds like the old boat I had. Sure enough when we went out on the lake,,,,there it was. I stopped the guy and found out that the boat had changed ownership 2 times since. I looked at the engine and outdrive and they were still the way I sat things up. He said it hasn't gave any problems.
