Does anyone know if anyone makes a kit to convert a Mercuiser 165 Inline 6 to a Thru Hull exhaust set up?

I know alot of people think only the V8's sound good with the thru hull but i heard a rat rod inline 6 with open headers and i dig the sound...

Thanks in advance

Re: Inline 6 165 Thru Hull Exhaust?

Awhile back I put thru-hull on my old boat. Older motor on a newer outdrive. The exhaust manifold would not match up to the newer drive. I made a blank off plate out of 3/8 aluminum and put it over the hole where the exhaust would enter the outdrive through an exhaust tube. I then had a piece of 2" stainless pipe bent to match up to my engine exhaust manifold thru the hull just below the water line. Drilled a 3" hole thru the transom. Placed the new pipe thru the hole and attached it to the manifold.

I then took a piece of 1/4" stainless and cut a round disc 4 1/4" in diameter. I then found center and cut a hole to go over my newly made pipe. Once it was in place, I marked on the pipe where my flange (stainless disc) would be positioned. I then drilled 5/16" holes symmetrically around the flange in order to bolt it to the tansom. Drill these holes before welding the flange on the pipe. Otherwise it is a pain in the butt to drill holes with the pipe being in the way.

I welded the flange onto the pipe and then installed it. I left 2" sticking out to put on a rubber flapper to prevent water from being pushed into the exhaust while backing.

Even though it was just a 4 cyl, it sounded pretty cool. Sitting still or just idling, it was quiet except for the blurp blurp noise of the exhaust pushing up through the water. Once on plain is when the exhaust would sing nice and loud.

I looked for a kit and other options, but never found anything to help me out. Just used my own ingenuity to build my own. Yes, it can be done if your creative, patient, and have the time. My only scary part was drilling a hole through the transom.

I sold that boat 9 years ago and to my surprise, I saw it out on the lake this past weekend. Funny thing is, I heard it and told my buds that boat sounds like the old boat I had. Sure enough when we went out on the lake,,,,there it was. I stopped the guy and found out that the boat had changed ownership 2 times since. I looked at the engine and outdrive and they were still the way I sat things up. He said it hasn't gave any problems.

There is no KIT for thruhull exhaust, it's not a civic. Just get the needed parts and cut the hole. Great "tutorial" above, it really is that simple. You can get factory made thru-hulls on ebay pretty cheap.

Just Google "marine muffler". Hundreds of choices. I'd try to fabricate the piping in a way to allow one to be installed later, when you get tired of the noise. Or the police stop you.

As mentioned, don't expect it to sound anything like the rat rod you heard. There's a world of difference between automotive tuned headers and marine manifolds. The rod probably had other mods also, cam/rockers/high compression...

The Mark Twain in that link is a real beauty....and isn't a 200hp or it would have a 4bbl carb on it.

Hi 'nutcase:

The Mark Twain in the link has the elusive 200HP 292CID inline six mated to the II drive with a through hull water intake and exhaust as the II drive had neither. The engine has a belt driven water intake pump also. I understand that the 200HP is in fact accurate but the gas consumption is also legendary! Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the whole rig was discontinued after one year, 1969. Last week I went to see the OMC equivalent but it was too expensive.

I can understand the potential need to put through hull on. As SS described, if the parts can't be scrounged to put the exhaust through the drive.

However, an I-6 is going to sound like an old Nova with a bad muffler. At least to my ears.;)

I live in Kansas City and went to go and look at this Mark Twain to potentially buy it, but it was too much of a project for me at the time. There is a youtube video of the boat sitting at idle without the outdrive on. I don't think it sounds too bad...

Re: Inline 6 165 Thru Hull Exhaust?

Hi Guys:

I realize that this thread is quite old but it seems to have come back to life again! The MCM inline 6 200hp rig is the "Holy Grail" for inline six fans. They are few and far between as they were only made for around one year in 1969. They were set up in a somewhat experimental fashion as they have a belt driven through hull water intake pump and no through-hub exhaust as they used the model II outdrive. At one point I seriously considered purchasing the one mentioned in the previous threads even though the trip to pick it up would have been a long one. However, the rig is such an oddball that spare parts would be almost impossible to acquire and the advantages over the MCM 165, 250 cid would be minimal. Also, from my research I understand the other legendary part is that the gas consumption is vast!
Having said all that, I still post on the local Craigslist auto section for an automotive 292 inline six so I can make the conversion and hook it to a regular pre-alpha drive. Then the problematic Model II drive and through-hull pump would be eliminated so you could get the 200HP and only have the gas consumption problem. If I can buy one for the right price I'll likely give it a try.
