What defines a stiff or sticky controller?

Without another boat sitting near by for comparison, I thought I would ask here to help judge if my controller is "right" or stiffer than it should be.

How easy is your controller movement while in gear? To help provide a way of describing it, how does your "in gear" movement throughout the entire range compare to your "throttle only" movement? Same? Stiffer?

Re: What defines a stiff or sticky controller?

I have a dual helms which really adds to the drag on my cables. Last year I had one 28' cable that went bad. At the beginning of the season, the bridge helm shifter was a little stiff. By the mid season, it took some major effort to shift. By seasons end, The threaded rod end bent like a hair clip and the cable completely seized. With needing to haul the ole girl out, I raised the outdrive and unhooked the bad cable. Then I used the cabin helm to motor from the dock to load her up. Once the seized cable being unhooked, I was able to use the cabin shifter with my little finger. My throttle cable which is daisy chained to both helms takes a bit more effort, but I think if one was unhooked, I could use a finger to move the throttle. This season I replaced the bad cable and I was surprised that it now shifts with a single finger without much effort.

BTW I run a VP 280 outdrive on the boat in my avatar...........SS
