Control box lever/shifter not in correct position

Good day folks,

Please forgive me for being a bit ignorant on what is probably an easy fix; however, my searches have come up empty.

I recently purchased a 93 Searay with a Mercuiser Alpha one. The control lever seems to be out of alignment. Basically Neutral is at the 2'oclock position and reverse is straight back (horizontal). All the gears and throttle work fine, I just want to put it back to its proper 12'oclock position.

Is this an easy deal? I wanted to poll the forum before embarking on exploritory surgery. I am sure it is not as easy as taking out the retaining screw at the bottom of the lever and readjusting the lever.... is it???

Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome to Iboats!

Most controls are adjustable by removing the handle.
A picture of the one you have may help.

Is it mounted securely?

What happens when you put it in forward at full throttle. Where does the handle land? Will it hit the helm if you move it?

Re: Control box lever/shifter not in correct position

Guys.. thanks for the quick responses. Much appreciated.

GARY: I will snap a picture of the controls and post the moment I get home from work. It looks like the standard OEM control. It seems to be secure. No wobble nor is it loose.

DON: At full throttle the controls are at the 11 o'clock position. I can't get the lever horizontal toward the helm but if memory serves me it will clear it just fine.

Post a picture of your control. You may have to reset the neutral lockout.

EDIT: Missed your comment to Gary, will watch for the picture.

Man,That would drive me nuts...Behind the throttle only button in the center of the control there should be one or two screws that come out and let you adjust it.
Not real familiar with that particular model but it should be adjustable.
I'm sure Don knows...;)

Nope, Don doesn't know either. Never seen one of those before. must be a searay thing.
Still, if you pull the handle, you will see the notch for neutral. Then determine if it's adjustable or not.
If not, as I suspect, it may be aimed that way to allow the cables to go down below the speaker, then aft.

Thanks guys.. good news.. It was simple. I took off the lever and re-aligned the threads ad the neutral notch. It seems to be traveling normal. I will take my little tool baggy out with me on Saturday just in case I have to make a minor adjustment.

Thanks again!
