9.9 Evinrude Leaking oil from little hole

hi i have a 9.9 evenrude leaking a creamy color oil out a little hole right behind the exhaust and dripping all over the prop. can one can help me out? Thanks

did thsi happen after you were out on the water for a while? I had a 15 hp, which is basically the same engine, that would leak the watery oil if i idled a ways coming back into the launch. If i ran it hard for a bit before coming in I wouldn't get the leaks. Not scientific but my experience.

Not to worry. It is common (expected) with two strokes. It is unburned oil/Fuel. Rick.

It's just partially / unburnt 2 stroke oil in my opinion. No worries.

and why would unburent oil come out from a little hole under the cavitation plate. i would think it would come out from the exhaust. Thanks

It mostly does go out the prop with the exhaust. What your getting from the hole is oil/gas that sticks to the internal metals and then slowly runs down and out the hole. Your bucket photo does look a little excessive compared to what I get out of mine but I don't know how long you ran your motor before taking the picture. Rick.

i ran it Less then 5 minutes. But how does unburend oil/gas get into the exhaust. I am just worried that it is not something to do with the lower unit and seals and stuff. i am trying to sell it because i found out that a short shaft does not work well on a boat that requires a long shaft. and how would i get rid of this problem? Thanks

Hello,

This is my first post so hi to all. I have the exact same 'problem' with my 1962 10hp sportwin.

It worried me because when I drained the lower unit oil this year, what came out what a green, lumpy oil that looked like it had been there 100 years. I replaced with nice new oil, but then I notice what looks like a very similar substance coming out of a tiny hole. I assumed that the hole was not supposed to be there and I had serious lower unit problems, was going to seal it up today!

But this is a common problem? I'm new to outboards having bought my engine (with boat attached) for ?1 last year. The boat i restored no problem, but I'm terrified of anything going wrong with the motor because surely you can't get parts for these any more?

Dont seal up any holes. They are almost certainly drain holes to allow the last of the water to drain from the leg.

If you are concerned about oil leaking it is usually easy to tell gear oil from its foul smell .. like rotting cabbages .

Oil from the fuel is uaually partly burnt and smells that way or of gasoline.
