I am wonering what battery is best to use on this Outboard. I currently had a BMW 7 series on the boat to start the engine but after 5 times out the 6th time the engine would not kick over at all. If it did it would run for like 2-3 mins then quite. I'm not sure if it's the battery but after attempting to restart the engine it would not kick over at all. It would not even turn. Should I just go out and buy a Blue Top Optima battery?

A typical marine cranking battery is all you need, anywhere from about 500 cranking amps up, 900 or 1000 would be overkill for that little outboard it shouldn't take that much amperage, your charging system may be fried look in the for adults only section for better explanation.

Bad connections ?? Not charging ??
Are you using the battery for powering anything else while using the boat ??

I use it to power the lights only at night but besides that its used to only power up the engine. When the engine is running does it recharge the battery like a car? I'm really new to boats so I'm not sure what is needed or what to look for.

It should recharge as you run. Do a voltage check on the battery while running.
Let us all know your results. Outboards do not have the charging ability of a car but will recharge enough for starting, lights etc.

Your best bet is to make sure its charging and then get the biggest battery that fits in the available space.

So basically get a voltmeter and when the engine is running place the probes of the voltmeter and record the charger and then when the engine is not running do the same and should it be the same or different? I'll post my findings later.

Only running matters. Measure DC voltage across battery terminals with motor at fast idle (say 1200 RPM). You need to see 13.5 VDC or higher if charging, otherwise more to do.

Re: 85HP Evinrude Outboard Battery

Ok i still haven't taken the boat out yet but my friends bought a new marine battery but it would not crank the motor over. It scared us first but we tried out auto battery and it cranked over after a few tries. Specs on Marine Battery: MCA 715 CCA 575 while the auto battery is CA 1000 and CCA 815. Did we get a smaller battery then what is need to crank the motor over? Also is it a smart invest on getting a solar panel to have aboard the boat to keep a constant charge on the battery?

Re: 85HP Evinrude Outboard Battery

can you turn the motor over by hand (wrench)?
you may need a new starter, or may still have a bad conection at the solinoid.

Did you check all the connections yet ???
Get your original problem solved before you start talking solar panels. One step at a time.
Either battery in good shape should turn your motor around.

What is the size of a BMW-7 battery? Where is it commonly used? I've never seen one.

Turning it over by hand using the rope? I didn't try that. The last time I did that was when it was in water and it did turn over but held only for a few minutes. I'll try it next time the boat is at my place. As for connection what connection do you want me to check? I'm new to the whole boat thing.

The BMW Battery Specs (One that turned the motor over):
CA 1000 and CCA 815

The Marine Battery Specs (The one that did not work):
MCA 715 CCA 575

Please let me know what connections to check and what are solinoid. I may just have to post pictures of the motor so that way you guys can help me which connections to check and point them out on the picture.

It's commonly used on a BMW 7 Series and the specs are in the above post.

U need to check your rectafier.. Mine was doing the same thing.. They wanted 50 dollars for it online but I went to frys and got a 200v 25amp rectifier for 4.99. I put it on and now it runs and charges perfectly. What's happining is your stator is kicking AC voltage to your rectifier and then the rectifier puts out 13.50 volts back to your battery.. It's kinda like running your car with no alternator.. The longer you run your engine the more your batteries get drained.
