I just received a kit for my Water pump and it states to use:
- BMCA Gasket Sealing Compound
- BMCA Needle Bearing Grease
- BMCA Moly Lube

My question is: Can I use generics for these items:
- Any gasket sealer or are there water/temperature requirements?
- Any marine grease?
- What is a 'Moly' Lube....Can I use a generic lube or are there water/temperature requirements?

Tx Frank - first time Boat Engine repair person!

You can use an equivalent product in my opinion not a different product.

Moly lube is a very high pressure grease for the splines at the top of the driveshaft. Only needed if you intend to drop the LU sometime in the future.

Got one Jim, but still in school :)
What unit did I drop to get to water pump?
Isn't it the lower unit?

You were reading Jim's signature about the manual. It is in every post he makes.
Yes you dropped the lower unit.

I've seen that so many times I don't even notice but I can see it would be a little offensive if you thought it was part of his response to you. Too funny. I have used a gray Permatex sealing compound with success. I just don't remember what it was called but I think it is the only gray product they make. You always need to grease the splines on the top of the drive shaft and if there is a place for an O ring below the splines make sure you get that installed as well. Never grease the top of the drive shaft though as it can have detrimental consequences. The grease can hydraulically stop the drive shaft from going in all the way causing you to have ( in theory ) a longer drive shaft which will cause the pump to break or be so tight it won't turn. Best of luck. Your on the right track. Rick.

i use just enough permatex to hold the gasket in place. i use 1 small gob of water proof marine grease, and my finger to lube the splines, always lube them. you do not want the drive shaft to rust into the crankshaft, as the impeller should be changed every 2-3 years.

Tx to all the suggestions, they were just what I needed.

I have one last question after reading install instructions again.

They say to use a 50:1 oil to lube the impeller!
Can someone tell me exactly what i should use to lube the impeller?

tx, frank

Not really necessary, but you could use dish washing soap, Vaseline, any kind of oil or grease. Just makes it a little easier to get the impeller into the pump body and it's only there for a few seconds once you run the motor. I prefer dry so the impeller stays where I put it, but just a personal preference. On small motors like yours, the impeller is very easy to get into the pump body.

Re: Evinrude 6hp Water Pump Kit

Tx for all your responses.
Today I installed the Water Pump ......but....
it doesn't seem to be getting water to the thermostat area! It is dry there and there is no water coming from 'pee' hold. Well I'm not really sure as I don't know exactly where pee hole is.....but i didn't see any water coming out anywhere unless it comes out with exhaust...

Anyway, I have the lower unit out and put a electric drill, using chuck, on spline to turn over....and water pump seems to be pumping fine...

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Also, is a thermostat really needed? What happens if I don't use?

tx, frank

Often times the problem is simply that the leg isn't deep enough in the water barrel. A thermostat is required for efficient operation. Without, the cylinders and plugs tend to foul up quicker. Rick.

... Or, you missed the water pump outlet with the water tube, or the grommet got caught in the end of the tube and folded over.

Yes the stat is needed, or the motor will run too cold and you'll get a bunch of carbon build up.

Ok, got it done.
Problem: LU wasn't deep enough in water as suggested.

Will be taking to lake tomorrow for some trout fishing.
Wish me luck.

Tx again,
frank

Good you found the cause ... too shallow for very long, and bye, bye water pump.
