You don't state where you boat. A handheld would not have enough range if you're really out in the open water and need help. If you ever plan to boat more than a couple of miles I would strongly suggest getting a mounted version with a full antenna.
Sorry for not giving more details. I'm familiar with the limitations of handhelds. I dont go offshore but in the St. Johns River in Jacksonville and the intracoastal. Mainly I'm trying to see if anyone has experience with Standard Horizon handhelds and possibly any models similar to this one.
I've got a handheld Cobra, it's pretty good although it took me a while to figure out all the gizmoes. Cabela's bargain cave under a hundred, I just couldn't pass it up. Can't help you with your brand, but thought I'd give you an option.
AND....NO!!!! I don't want to hear any jokes asking how my wife likes the COBRA.
My dad's 24' Seaswirl has a Standard Horizon GPS that works pretty well...we haven't had any issues with it, so I'm sure their VHF radios may be quality products as well.
I have a Standard Horizon 750 and I rate it right up there with ICOM which I have owned for both boats and airplanes. If you are using it for bridges and marinas, it should serve you well. If you want it for emergencies, call the Coast Guard and find out what their coverage is in your area. You are line of sight with VHF and down low on the water doesn't go far.
