Re: Question about WOT?
Also found this, it is from baylinerownerclug.org
first of all, it is not the shaft that changes in length between the 250/270/275 and 280/290 SP and so on style...... Well, actually the shafts are of different lengths..... but with the proper spacer installed, the exposed shaft section is the same....... it does not affect which propeller can be used. (it gets confusing for many)
The length of "exposed" shaft (from the spacer back) is dictated by the spacer/line cutter....... this is different for each drive.
NOTE: 250/270/275 must use the spacer/line cutter for that drive.... you cannot use the long spacer.
Conversely, the 280/290/SP and so on must use the spacer/line cutter for that drive...... you cannot use the short spacer.
Stay with the correct spacer, and the exposed shafts are same.
Short spacer/line cutter on the 250/270/275 ..... long spacer/line cutter on the 280/290/ SP and so on style!
But I'd think of more importance to your question is propeller hub style/length.
You will find two hub lengths that each require a different cone nut (spinner).
Short hub/long hub!
There are two types of "spinners" ..... one "full" spinner...... one multiple part spinner!
The multiple spinner works on either propeller hub..... ie; long or short!
For example:
The long hub propeller fits either style drive (w/ the correct spacer), but the spinner for the long hub is used w/out the forward piece, and it reaches inside of the female splines of the hub some.
The short hub prop fits either style drive, but the spinner is the full one (or the two piece with both halves being used).
Here is a spinner (cone nut) that does both short/long hub props.
It's machined for the center locking bolt, so it will do the 275 and later shafts. It is also relieved for the SS locking tab.
Bottom line.... don't get hung up on hub length..... just use the two piece spinner and you've covered for either prop.
