1998 15hp Johnson and have a little round indent in the lower gear casing and when I swing the motor out of the water it drips little oil for a few minutes. The indent is just forward of the prop on its leading edge and looks to be about 1/8" in dia. Any suggestions on what this could be. Many thanks...

Just a drain hole for the water, and because there's a small amount of unburned gas/oil in the exhaust, the water contains some of that amount ... which eventually drains out the hole you're referring to!

Nothing to worry about ... it's normal.

Thanks for that. It dripped enough to make me worried about polluting. Are there any seals that need to be looked at? What would happen if I plug it.

I wouldn't bother ... what little "gunk" might drip out that hole is far outweighed by what comes out the primary water exits with the engine exhaust and the water that's circulated thru the motor. It's just part of running a 2-stroke motor!

I can totally understand your point. My concern was when I return from a short run, other club members stare at these blobs of oil floating past theirs boats. It would be nice to take care of this. Others don't seem to have this problem to my extent. Anyway thanks for your input.

is your engine running premix gas? if so those engines tend to drip more oil than the ones that you dont premix because at idle they use less oil
