This is my first Boat motor I've ever had experience using. I'll tell you it seems to run smooth, it can be hard to start at times but usually its not a problem. I recently took it to a local outboard motor repair guy just to get it serviced(replace water pump impeller, change oil, etc) He called me back shortly after dropping it off and said that one of the cylinders does not fire. I went over and checked it out, and for sure, it is currently only firing from one cylinder. Is it possible this whole time ive had it(one year) that the motor has been running on one cylinder? With just me in the boat I feel like I'm cruising farelly well around the lake. When I have one or more persons with me it really bogs down, but runs smooth. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

Ryan

I have a 7.5HP Gamefisher (de-tuned version of the 15HP) and it was running on 1 cylinder. It was running smooth, but had poor performance, couldn't plane the boat. Mine had electronic ignition and the coils (BIM's) were no longer available, $160 ignition upgrade required. Hope you have points ignition or the mechanic can source a BIM coil for your outboard, expensive repair otherwise.

My outboard was working A'OK, then the next trip wouldn't plane, it failed that quickly, no on/off running OK then dogging out.

The mechanic did quote me a price of $160-200 to fix this problem, do you think thats the expensive repair your talking about?

Parts alone were $160 to upgrade my electronic ignition, did it myself.

$160-200 quote from the shop sounds like parts& labor to me, could be that you have points and he's doing a tune-up or maybe he has a BIM coil if it's electronic ignition. Either way it sounds like a fair price to get the ignition system running again, 1-2 hours of labor + parts.

Yes if you were on one cylinder its possible it might plane.8 or 10 mph but added weight would really bog down.Under ideal conditions that motor would run about 20 to 25 mph. A 2 stroke motor on one cylinder would feel normal for an inexperienced operator.
better late than never I think you are under control.

When I did have a fishfinder with a speed temp sensor that was working, the speed would reach up to 21MPH at best(just myself in the boat), so maybe its safe to say it was running on both.
thanks for the info!
