How good is a 1990 Ocean Pro 200?

Looking at buying an older WAC. This one has a Johnson OP200. Is this reliable power? (Assuming routine maint.) Also what makes it an "ocean pro"? Does it have more stainless and aluminum inside? Or is it a regular Johnson painted white? Thanks in advance!

Very good, powerful motors but a bit on the thirsty side. Properly taken care of it'll last a very long time. 87 octane, good oil and Champion plugs only.

Ocean Pro is a model designation. Basically an open deck, big bore 90*, carb'd V6 looper.

That makes me feel better. As far as internals, are they steel like most OBs and subject to the same amount of corrosion? Also did Evinrude buy Johnson or did they always come from the same place? I'm sure these are no-brainers but I'm relatively new to boating and green all together on the saltwater deal...Thanks for the reply!

I looked at the boat today. Seemed to run well. Big puff O smoke at start-up and ran about 4500rpm. In comparing to a Yamaha sws series that I also saw today I noticed something. Around the perimeter of the head (seam just below the spark plugs) there was a bunch of white crust and rust. The Johnson did not have this. I can only assume the Yamaha was very salty inside and would need major repair in the near future. What do you guys think?

i have a 93' 200 ocean pro. i like it for the most part (gas gussling torque monster). was 4500 rpms @wide open throttle? these things should run close to 6000. they all smoke at first startup don,t let that scare you. head gaskets go quick if motor is not flushed and rinsed routinely. to me that salty crust is a sign of bad maintanence

I didn't push it real hard. I plan on driving it again before the "possible" purchase. I think it had more BUT if not then is that a major problem? I also notice the steering was a bit stiff. Is it possible that it doesn't have hydraulic steering? Seems like a big motor to not have it. Thank you for the info.

just curiuos on rpm cause if thats all it had it would be a problem. ive seen these 453lb motors with cable steering makes it a fight. or bad hydrolic system. if you do purchase plan on proping it to get 5700- 6000 rpms for maximum engine life. wot does'nt hurt a 2 stroke. it hurts your wallet in gas. good motors though my 93 pushes my 21' 48mph@5800rpms. found 4 blades to be best. good luck. come back to prop section after you get a wot rpm and well help you if you need help.
