Back to the 84 Tracker Transom rebuild:

Engine is off and old wood gone. My next question is where can I get a 1 1/4" thick x 18" wide x 6" long piece of marine grade plywood? I cannot find anything 1 1/4" thick! If I'm going to have to glue a 1/2 and a 3/4 piece together, what is the correct procedure?

Thanks guys/gals.

Unless there's limited space, like it will interfere with the splash well, then it doesn't make a difference if its 1.25" or 1.5". Clamp it and use whatever resin you're using to glue it together.

Re: Odd size transom wood thickness.

Limited space is the problem. The wood sits full length in a metal track that's only wide enough for 1 1/4. As well as a couple other brackets that it bolts onto.

My next question is about the chemicals in treated wood. This wood is mostly sandwiched between an inner and outer sheet of aluminum. Are these same chemicals used in marine grade plywood? If so, should I just use a good outdoor grade plywood?

Thanks for the help.

The only wood you have to worry about in a tinnie is pressure treated . Marine grade is fine as well as regular exterior grade as long as its sealed on all sides with resin. I would go with 1/" and 3/4" to get your thickness as was said above and bond them together with whatever resin you are using to seal it . The marine will get expensive though having to buy 2 sheets just for the small transom pieces.

Re: Odd size transom wood thickness.

When replacing the plywood transom core in my aluminum 1965 LoneStar, I was faced with the same questions as you. The original core measured 1&5/8" and had 17 plies. Because modern plywood typically is metric, I found that 1/2" was actually 12mm and so on. Like you, I had an exact opening to fill and used fiberglass cloth between the layers of plywood to compensate for the loss of a few millimeters. In addition to the correct thickness of my transom core, I also tried to get the greatest number of plies for the maximum strength. Good luck with your project!

Thanks to all of you who responded on this thread and my other.

I picked up this 84 Tracker (Tournament 17.5 ft with 60hp Merc) to get me up and down the Savannah river for 6 months until I have to go to Germany for 3 years. I didn't want to spend much money and found this reliable little gem for $1000. The front decking and carpet had been replaced. The rear decking is aluminum. It wasn't until I got it home that I noticed why the owner was strapping up the engine....the transom was shot. Myself and a couple buddies fixed it up in about 9 hours! I took it out on the water today and it cranked right up. The transom was solid as a rock!

I'm a newbie to boating, but handy with a wrench. Thanks so much again.

Nine hours might be a record! Enjoy the boat and the pride of accomplishment.
