Hi all,

New to boats and this forum, I will spending much time hear doing research and I'm sure asking questions, by the way I'm the wife, i'm the computer person, hubby is the one doing the work, along with my help of course.

We picked this boat up for $500 a project for sure but we have time and we like to restore cars, this is the first boat. Anyhow it will be interesting. I will note our adverture as we go.

It's a Mercuriser 165 Aplha one 4 cyl. Motor turns by hand, oil is clean, inside of valuve cover very clean, no water in oil. Starter broke, but will have fixed this week. Some one stoled the hydralic piece that lifts the proper up, they cut the lines and removed the unit. Other than that motor is all there. Thefloor is soft from the seats back, cushions will need to be replace and of couse new floor and carpeting. What else should we check for and most important - IS THIS WORTH RESTORING!

Any helpful hints and info would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like it's worth it to me. Of course that question all depends on you guys. Just be prepared when you pull the floor up to replace more than just than that. Probably have to replace the stringers also and you'll want to check out the transom real well while you are at it. Good luck.

Welcome to iboats . The question of wether a boat is worth it to restore depends on many factors . Will you get all your money back out of it if you turn around and sell it after its done . Most likely not even close . Do you plan to keep and enjoy the boat for several years after its done and do you really like its styling if you can answer the last 2 questions yes then its worth restoring . The first thing to do with it is get it running and take it out see if you actually like it or not . While your at it do a search on here for Deck and Stringers and also a search for Transom . Those are the areas on a Glass boat that will get you in deep and if the floors soft then chances are so are the stringers nd transom.

Cool - at least we got the winter coming up - it's a good winter project. We've got it now in our AC garage until we can get a good cover for it.

As i mentioned we are not boat people so I have to learn the lingo like Stringers and other stuff, were is a good place for me to find that!

Hmmm Ok quicky boat term lesson :D the Deck is the floor :D The stringers support the deck from underneath :D the Transom is the rear most part of the boat there is wood in there as well. The port side is the left as you face the front of the boat the starboard side is the right side as you face the front of the boat speaking of the front of the boat thats the Bow and the rear is the stern. Theres alot of wood in a fiberglass boat that can and will rot that has to be replaced and that leads to itching from being covered with fiberglass dust from grinding fiberglass to replace said wood :D.

Now remember your dealing with the wife here, LOL. We plan on keeping it, we figured we will end up dumping around $2500 by the end, not looking for no show boat, just want to have some fun, we camp alot and some places where we go have lakes. We also live near the Cape Fear River in NC and think it would be nice to spend the day on.

We really don't fish, I grew up in Florida and just fished out, but maybe that will change, husband into drag racing, kind of taken a break from it so this should be fun, plus we always do these things together.

Oh by the way two days after we got it home we found 2 little kitties, they were in the engine compartment, we will keep them for now, see what happens, we have enough furry children but won't let nothing happen to them.

So wish us luck!

LOL well okie dokie then as long as we have SWMBO ( she who must be obeyed ) ;) in charge then yall are in good shape . The nice thing about a cuddie is if you like camping then it makes for a nice water camper in the spring and fall of course . The $2500.00 if you and the other half do 95% of the work you may stay in that budget . Dont let him have the checkbook :D I took a $50.00 dollar pond to almost $2000.00 when left to my own means and I'm not done with it yet :D:D.
