Yes, you can use needle bearing assy grease to hold the key to the driveshaft while sliding the pump assembly down. Use some sort of sticky grease.
Or PM me with a phone number and I will tell you of an UNAPPROVED shortcut, a shortcut that I use all the time with no problems.

The impeller key, the little plastic piece that fits in notch at bottom of drive shaft. The impeller is supposed to slide over it if notch on inside of impeller is lined up correctly, at least that's what I interpret the strategy to be. I don't know what needle bearing grease is and Advance Auto did not know what I was talking about, I take is supposed to hold it in place. I used Triple Guard in place but I guess not thick enough ???

A dab of any marine grease will work. Triple-Guard grease from Evinrude is one of the best and it will not hurt the rubber impeller or other rubber type parts.
It is even easier to use the o-ring that goes under the impeller to hold the plastic key wedge in place and then carefully lower the impeller down over it.

Got it !!! Seahorse5 was that you over on Continuous Wave? daselbee thanks.
Kind of used both tricks. Slid bottom o-ring down to bottom of shaft. Slid impeller (ONLY) down and held key in place with my index finger. Jiggled impeller until it fell over key. Sprayed housing down with silicone and slid down the shaft. Spun shaft clockwise and put a little downward pressure on housing until impeller spun in. Next time no adhesive on that o-ring.
