Hi . Quick question.
I am trying to find the temperature overheat switch on the Engine of a 1987 30 hp Johnson. J30ECUB I have the brown wire from the wiring it isnt attached to anything just hanging there. I saw a previous poster had pictured his for identification but mine doesnt have a temp switch there. I cannot find it any where on the engine block..... used to seeing them on the other johnsons i have on the rear of the motor as with the one on the earlier post. I am beginning to wonder if it has one.. ...
I would be greatful for any help....
Thanks
Tony

Look up the parts diagram for your motor on BRP's website to be sure.

Hi jim
Thanks for your reply.... I went to the site and looked it up... according to the parts diagram it does have one but it doesnt really show where it is located. It shows it to be hanging in mid air.. So i remain just as confused. I gues I must get my butt out to the store and buy the manual .

Almost all are located in a recess in the water cover or cylinder head. Most are located on the upper part of the head and will have a tan wire associated with the switch. Find the tan wire and just follow it.

hi jim.
Thats where i though it should be. I have a 50 johnson from 72 and on the cylinder cover near the upper spark plug is where that one hides.
Unfortunately The tan wire is not connected to anything on this one.

I guess someone could have replaced the head with one having no sensor.

Could it be that some one removed the sensor and fitted a tell tale? There s at the side of the water jacket at the right side, as looking from the rear, a brass nipple fitting with a hose giving a tell tale...
Is there a surface temp guage or alarm i could fit. I reall dont fancy drilling the head. ??
Thanks

Sure, Teleflex makes outboard sensors that just require surface contact. Make sure you get an outboard gauge and sensor, because the range of the gauge is way different and the sensor unique. Works good too. Doesn't connect with alarm system, though.
