I recently bought a 35 big twin 1957. After sorting out the carb and ignition systems I noticed it was still harder to start than it should.

Following another member I disconnected the linkage for the compression release valves and voila, it starts MUCH better, 2 pulls max. Sure its a bit harder to pull the cord but hands down an improvement.

Much easier to rope start it using the notch on the edge of the flywheel, but that means pulling the recoil starter off...shoulder surgery changes your approach to many things in many ways.

You just discovered the reason the compression relief arm is missing on the majority of those motors.

mines missing, I can barely pull the thing. Im not a small guy 6' 240lbs but DAMN if i didnt have an electric starter on it, I would hesitate to go out everytime if I had to pull start it.
