1988 johnson wont idle when it is warm

i have a 1988 johnson 50 hp and it wont idle when it is warm. When i take it to go fishing i have to go through a small channel to get to the lake. It fires up and runs good the whole way out to the lake, but as soon as i go down the lake it will not idle anymore. When i stop it tries to run but it just coughs and dies. I don't no much about outboards, but i don't think it is anything obvious. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was a carb problem and said he fixed it, but it still run like crap when it is warm.

check your spark when it is warm, could be a coil heating up and failing, then running on one cylinder.

i think the spark is ok. What would be the best way to check it? I am not sure i am doing it right. I just pulled the plug and turned the motor over. It seemed to have the same spark before and after getting warmed up. I also noticed that the top spark plug is a little wet. Could the compression be bad on the one cylinder.

Always Good To Do Comp. Test To See How Strong Motor Is But Your Problem Is Sounds Like Loose Magnets On Fly Wheel Or Stator.
Just Had Loose Magnets And It Did Same Symptoms

Check spark with a needle gap spark tester set @ 7/16" ... should get a strong blue spark.

Always Good To Do Comp. Test To See How Strong Motor Is But Your Problem Is Sounds Like Loose Magnets On Fly Wheel Or Stator.
Just Had Loose Magnets And It Did Same Symptoms

How did you fix that? I've got my flywheel off right now to inspect my stator.

are magnets loose from fly? if so clean old glue off fly and magnets then reinstall them with new magnet glue spacing thm with 7/16 bolts. might be different size depending on motor. the better job of cleaning the better the job i use sand blaster on fly and bench ginder wire wheel on magnets. this glue is made just for this and needs to sit for 24 hours.
