I have a 97 Baja 180 Islander and I am working up in the New England area. I was wondering if I can run my boat in salt water? If so what do I need to do to get it ready and what to do after the salt water trip.

Thanks
Brian

it depends on how long you plan on staying in the water
if a week or so you can put a wax compound and prevent barnacles and such.
if you want to go by the season youll need bottom paint. and to rinse your motor out with fresh water if possible if its an outboard you also would need zinc anodes
but other than that youd be ok

Boat should not have any issue with running in salt water. You should rinse the engine out with freshwater with muff after you pull the motor out.
I would be more concern with your trailer if it is not a galvanized trailer? Even with one time use on salt, painted trailer will have a issue ?? It is tough to rinse trailer out and it will rust out from inside of tube. My 2C

Now would it be safer if you pull it out of the ocean and maybe the next day drop it in the lake and run it?

i disagree. flush and rinse as soon as possible, do not wait until the next day. we keep our boat at the dock for a month each year. even in the water the boat is washed down every evening, and the mooring cover put on. no salt sticky boat in the morning. the boat is 10 years old and has no corrosion on it.

If I was able and it was convenient I would rinse the boat after saltwater use and then run it in freshwater immediately or the next day.

I have a saltwater boat and I would do the above to mine if it was convenient. (it's not)

I was wondering because I live about 10 minutes from a lake and pass it on my way back from the ocean. I want to go in the ocean but have heard horror stories about trailers falling apart.

it all depends on what the trailer is made of Is your aluminum Painted steel or Galvinized

painted steel, but I surely do not want it to fall apart after just one trip to the ocean.

Best thing for a painted trailer that has seen salt water is a dunk in fresh water lake. That will get fresh water to all the places a hose cant reach to remove the salt. No problem with the boat, just flush it when you are done.

There is no nothing wrong to deep your trailer in salt water my friend, just give it a nice soak with your home hose once you done @ the beach. I boating in salta water all year long and my trailer is fine. Parts like springs, hubs, etc... will rust in any weather, so HAVE FUN!!!!!! DONT WORRIED BE HAPPY...:)
