Thanks Wellcraft, yeah I used to be a ford dealer mechanic, heavy line work. Never EVER had a 302 or a 460 blow up. SOLID motors for sure.
We will be sticking with Mercs or OMC cobras in future projects if we can help it.! if not just for ease of parts and more commonly known to buyers (as we want to fix and sell some boats)
I still need to hook up the electric shift and test it out! shoulda done that when it was in the boat! DOH:eek:

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider DAY 14 MORE NEW PICS glassing stringers

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider DAY 14 MORE NEW PICS glassing stringers

DAY 14 Aug 31rst (these are the actual days we WORKED on the boat, not days since project started FYI) 2 Hours of work

NEW PICS------->http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman7/index.htm

Well, Sunday Aug 30th we hit the lake in the glastron for some R&R, the water was warm and it was an awsome day at the lake! sorry no pics left camera in truck by accident. Yes we seen PASTIES! this gal jumped from a mega high cliff, no she didnt lose the pasties (darn) yes she was stacked well. There were a couple 250k boats tied together in the narrows at lake mead, offshore and cataramoran hulls, one 23" sleekcraft, yellow and white, looked sweet as it took off to go back to the marina.

Monday Aug 31rst did some glassing in of wood stringer stuff. Glassed in behind all of the stringer wood up to top of foam, installed stringers, glassed in the ski locker and its divider, the divider block between the stringers near the eng compartment, and the first couple coats of glass in fuel tank area. Have to do at least 3 coats.

We have to wait to get the floor decking in before glassing the eng area though. That was the way the oem guys did it, thats the way were doing it. Ideally we would've removed all of the foam and glassed completely over the stringers and eng mounts. Because of cost overruns with this project and the cost of pour in foam, the old stuff is staying. I dont like the design of the stringer system and glass system in this boat, originally they had pieces of wood in the eng area instead of solid stringer going front to back. too many wood pieces!
IMG_0932.jpg

Originally I wanted to go with 4x4 pressure treated in eng compartment, but since the main stringer lined up with the middle of the eng mount wood, we are stuck with the way we have it.

It should be fine this way for 15 to 20 more years. Considering there was 20 inches of water in there as we can tell from water stain line inside the boat, if the next guy lets that much water get in and sit for months, that's his bad!

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration UPDATE Sept 2nd 2009 work

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration UPDATE Sept 2nd 2009 work

Day 15 ---- 2 more hours

Used the trusty angle gringer ($15 Harbor Freight) with a worn flap disc to smooth out the foam so it is all perfectly level, grindered the bottom half of the inside where the floor will tab in, scraped the last remanants of carpet glue off around the inside / shelf areas...removed a few rusty staples. that took approx 45 minutes
NewmanStart-of-week-3%20(2).jpg

Last night about 11pm added 3rd and 4th layer of fiberglass to stringers in fuel tank area....it is real thick and solid now. Did it late because it was a reasonable 85 degrees. took approx another 45 minutes moving quick
NewmanStart-of-week-3%20(5).jpg

altered the brace between there and the engine compartment by adding a wood block at the bottom drain thru, put a 1" hole at the bottom of it, and epoxied in a stainless sleeve for a drain plug. took 1/2 hour to make and fit
NewmanStart-of-week-3%20(7).jpg

Now any transom end water will stay just in the eng compartment. The drain in the frt of the eng compartment can be easily removed if alot of water makes it into the ski locker / fuel area.

Next we will be finalizing the ski locker area, need to add some wood for support of the ski locker hatch. Wanted to do that fancy aluminum trim that has the rounded edges, can't find it online anywhere. avail as new from Factory only? guess so.....rectangular ski locker hatch it is then!! also we will be painting it with rustoleum oil paint (tan) to match the carpeting. Decided yesterday it may be best to use a coregated rubber mat in the ski locker, since carpet (tan) would just get moldy and smelly Hmmm why havn't the Manufacturers thought of that?.
NewmanStart-of-week-3%20(10).jpg

Got the new stuff in! Yea it's like Christmas! New (white) intake and exhaust vents and 20'ft of white blower tube in from UPS. The vents fit the old vent boxes perfectly! We were worried since the measurements online didnt match our opening size exactly. They looked the same though so took a risk and ordered em. They will look good on the orange pearl upper hull area. we have 2 (intake) in frt and 2 in back.
NewmanStart-of-week-3%20(19).jpg

The wife is gonna do some painting later today with the tan rustoleum in the upper transom area, up underneath and under the dash areas (cover that pea green YUK!)
a couple weeks earlier we scored a 26'ft by 8'ft premium boat carpeting for 1/2 price so paid $100 on Craigslist instead of $200 plus shipping so 50cents a sq ft SCORE That tan carpet should go well with the white and orange scheme. May get dirty fast though DOH.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider DAY 16 8 Hour day--Laying floor

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider DAY 16 8 Hour day--Laying floor

WORK DAY 16 = 8 hours labor

Well to anyone following this thread, we are slowly making progress, we've owned the boat for 5 weeks now, about 2 of which we actually spent any time working on it (photo work is slow) thanks for following ...

see all pix from this date HERE plus couple lake pix from Labor day http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman9/

Saturday the 5th of Sept we did final cuts on the cross-members that go in the fuel tank area, layed down some 1/2 foam for fuel tank padding, so the tank sets off the hull a bit. (we used some concrete expansion joint foam...HDepot) that we had left over from our driveway pour. made sure the tank set in there good and level...then. put in the side spacers, screwed the tank in (unlike the last "repair" from Prev owner) then we laid the cross members in, screwed em down.

Flooring-boat%20(20).jpg

Made ALOT of measurements for the flooring, that paid off as when we dry fit it in, it was a perfect fit! YEA Laid in the floor, screwed her down, fits awsome. Used some spray exspansion foam in the rear transom area where we removed some foam for repairs. It "expanded" overnight to double, looks like we baked bread back there! lol

Flooring-boat%20(26).jpg

in the front floor area we needed a little bit of foam added in as a 1/4" spacer so it would lay right, well that swelled up a bit more than expected too...needless to say we have to smooth that area out so there isn't a rise in the floor when we carpet. see pics

Flooring-boat%20(28).jpg

Flooring-boat%20(25).jpg

Today, Sept 7th we are going to fiberglass the floor and tab it in.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration WORKDAY 17, 8 hours

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration WORKDAY 17, 8 hours

DAY 17 - Glassing in the floor Deck - approx 8 more hours of labor, 2 gallons of epoxy resin

39 more new pictures HERE

see the 1rst post in this thread to see the links to ALL the pics

Well, today was nice out so we started around 11am, had some wood to cut out for the deck near the transom area, and cut a transition strip for the floor to bow area on the table saw.

The deck raised up about a 1/4 " where we had sprayed some expansive foam, so now that it was perma stuck in there, we used the trusty ANGLE GRINDER with a flap disc to take some of the edge down and knock the foam coming out of the joint. Then we used a little bit of bondo to fill the transition in, so the fiberglass would lay nice (it doesn't like gaps and such, tends to create an air pocket that is weak. see pic of before
Glassing%20in%20the%20deck10.jpg

Glassing%20in%20the%20deck18.jpg

Cut all the fiberglass cloth for the deck areas, ski locker area and transition area to bow. Laid some plastic down in the ski locker as to not make too much mess, same over fuel tank. Used a foam roller to spread the resin, it REALLY makes it nice and smooth as a final result, BUT, it sucks up some of the resin, so we're going to do a second coat of just resin when everything is glassed in.

Finished tabbing in the deck near the transom,
Glassing%20in%20the%20deck14.jpg

laid the first layers in the engine compartment area, with heavy mesh fiberglass cloth. Got 2 coats in on about 1/2 that area, needs 3 to 4 total coats I reckon, to be very strong and super water tight. shoud add around 25 lbs to the boat easy in resins lol
Glassing%20in%20the%20deck38.jpg

Glassing%20in%20the%20deck37.jpg

I pretty bushed, so that's it for today! Cheers and happy boating!

ps We actually started to do a "Quickie" restore on our 23 foot, 1981 Sleekcraft Executive, Chevy 350 eng, Chrysler 300 sterndrive. We will be starting a new thread with that restore here on wonderful I-Boats soon

For this season, it will mostly be cosmetics and some well needed basic maintenance, plus repairing the broken in 1/2 sterndrive upper housing.

My '77 Glastron is built very similar to your Newman, so I'm watching this thread with great interest. Mine needs a new deck and probably stringers, but I'm hoping the transom is okay. Looks like you're making great progress, keep it up!

That Sleek looks sick. Sorry, couldn't resist...

Hi Rick
thanks for the reply, I almost thought no one was checking out the thread anymore!
Yeah I wish we could just chuck in the motor/carpet and winsdscreen.... still lots to do yet unfortunetly

We HAVE to eliminate the ugly pea green, going white and pearl orange, no choice, already got the upholstery done! prob do actual gel coat on bottom and automotive pearl clear up top 1/2 so we have to finish wet sanding it, fix a few gel cracks, couple little scrapes on bottom, once the boat is painted gelled up we will install the carpet and stereo, windows, I want NEW white faced guages in there (costs about an extra $175) all the new bilge and blower etc

motor needs the rear main seal replaced, so we are yankin the pan checking teh bearings and replacing th seal whilst ini there., and there's some water in the oil, Im hoping it is from when it was full of water, may have been sunk at one time! has that big stringer bellow that allows ALOT of water in fast if there's a tear in it. I have never seen a 302 ford with blown head gaskets...or cracked heads (I worked for a ford dealership 10 years heavy line mechanic) hopinig for the best!
anyways, checked the plugs, they looked good no bad signs on em. we are going to mount the motor soon, on a ground based bracket so we can test it before it goes in.

We also need to re do the trailer, trailer wiring, replace the bad axle and hubs, clean and paiint the rims...uuuhhhg.... all that shouldn't take too long.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Looks like a nice project you have there. My wife and I recently purchased a 79 Newman 16' tri-hull with a 100hp Johnson Outboard. We are in the process of restoring it as well. Gave $200 for boat, trailer, and motor. So far the only thing we have done is geting the motor back into good condition. Then we have to replace the floor that was just done, and then onto the interior. Hopefully the gelcoat will wax out and we can be done with it. FYI Newman Marine was built here in Oklahoma. They went out of business in 87 I believe. Yours is only the third one I have ever seen before, and the first V-hull too. I cant wait to see what it will look like when you get it done.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Hi Bacafrog
good luck with your project, yeah I have never seen a Newman brand, before I found it on Craigslist bought ours for $300 will probably end up with close to $4000 OUCH! into it plus ALOT of labor hours
The V hull on ours is like a battleship type hull, should cut the water great, doubt it will get water over the bow ever.......interesting to see how it handles on the water and in waves...we will be selling this boat...may hold her till next spring..but it will be sold

Ill say this, we dont have much experience in boat restos, but I would say Newman didnt do a great job in the stringer area design, and was a little lacking in use of fiberglass in the under deck areas.... we did a slight change in the stringer layout on ours.....

anyways....start a thread if you haven't already, on your Newman boat rest progress

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

I will try to get a thread started up about our boat. I havent started tearing out the floor yet, since the kid who had it before me supposedly just did it. I dont like the look of his work, so I have to tear it up and do it right. Right know we are dealing with the motor.

I was hoping you would say that Newman had done a good job underneath, but after hearing what you said about the stringers I might be redoing all of that as well. Now hurry up and get the boat done so I can see what it will look like.

WORKDAY 18 more fiberglassing! 1 1/2 hours at night 13 more pics HERE

AFter a week "break" from working on the ol' Newman, Im Back!
Spent most of last week either working on Project Jezabel (the 23' Sleek) Turbo restore, or actually photographing stuff for clients! making money etc...ACTUAL WORK

Well today it's Saturday LAKE DAY...so off we go for some beer fishing and swimmin....before we go tho...Ill post some work from last night

The Newman has been sittin' for a week, so I roughed up the areas that needed more coats of resin, with 100 grit sandpaper, blew it out with the leaf blower, wiped it down with acetone, prepped my fiberglass cloth, made my cuts and fitted the cloth, mixed the resin and hardener etc....slopped it all in for a second coat in the engine compartment, also did another coat in a few deck areas that needed a little more resin to be perfectly sealed in from the elements......
