I don't know how I've missed this thread but it looks like you're doing a pretty good job. Can't wait to see the finished project.

Nothing better then seeing the whole family involved with a project like this and see the little one smiling really big.

You are a life saver going over your entire resto. As soon as our boat gets back from having the engine gone over I need to redo it's floor. I've been stressing over it since we got the boat ('72 Grady-White Sportsman). It's the same shade of green as yours. You've got to love the 70's :D.

Hi John, yes..we're painting part of the ship.... house of kolors sunset orange pearl see image--- on the top, above the bump strip, automotive HOK clear coat over that (sprayed) going to attempt GEL COATING = white on the bottom, we want to do it the best possible...if we're going to restore a bunch of boats we want to know how to do gel coats...so why not do it on the first resto! lol I pray it goes well! might have to buy a gel coat spray gun...got a real good paint hvlp gun and a cheap Harbor freight suction paint sprayer...one of em may work...might need a bigger orifice for em...

Hi Hvac......yup we're nuts...and yup, and I'm sure lucky I married a truck drivers daughter from pennsylvania coal town...she's a worker! thanks for posting! and reading both posts. It's alot of doing at once...uhg...is all I have to say...

Hi Joseph....no problem...and thanks....and the 70s UUUUHG what was with the GREEN FETISH? couches, carpet, cars...dang...everything was olive army colored! lol.......it is alot of work...from the start I thought, FAST AND EASY....couple days...NOT lol
But it's do-able...Here's a bit of advice ....buy LOTS of resin, dip your brushes in acetone between bowls of resin mixes..as you'll probably do more than one bowl in a session...I use 18oz and 24oz dixie type bowls..they hold up great, add some acetone and mush the brushes around in between bowl mixes, cheap brushes...sometimes foam rollers but they definetly dont last and are pricey...used em for the top of the deck, made for NICE and smooth layout of resin..just dumped it on and rollered it...added a smidge of acetone to thin down the mix a little help soak it thru the fiberglass cloth etc......buy LOTS of resin cant state that enough......any brand of nitrile gloves in the 100 pack, they dont disintegrate in acetone like the cheap latex rubber gloves...measure twice cut once......Im sure your boat is a bit different than mine, theres lots of other great threads that go over the process, Im just doing it a bit faster....:)
Ill have to search out your post/s to check out your resto.......

Yeah, I know. We put the motor in late spring and ran the boat all summer. The plan is too start tearing it apart maybe as early as November. I know she needs a new deck, and likely strings, too. I'll core check the transom, but I believe it is solid. I'll start a thread when we commence the deconstruction.

Your interior is going to be really nice. White face guages would set it off. You can get all the guages at the 'Zone' except for the speedo and trim, and they are pretty inexpensive. I have looked at them, and they aren't too bad. Getting a proper speedo to match them would be the trick. I want the white face guages eventually, also. My plan is too get the smaller guages (temp, oil press, and boost:eek:) at the 'zone', and then get the larger Speedo and Tach guages from Iboats, so they would match. Make sense?

Vegas, that's gonna be a great color combo... The only problem your going to have is deciding which boat to take to the lake :D:D:D

Hi Racin
Im ordering mine (guages) from either Iboats or Basspro...they are 40% less than autozone...plus no tax! would be nice if there was a guage FACEPLATE replacemnt...that wasnt expensive...to just replace the faces.....the best way is screen printed plastic....hmmm....I took a spcreen printing class back in the day....gets me thinkin .........LOL...

about 1/2 way done on the Sleek projects sterndrive repairs....bought some supplies for painting the Newman OMC stringer drive... white.... and the same for the sleek (its a chrysler) and it is also white...any leftover paint will be used on trailers...... $300 for the painting supplies! OUCH will post pics when I get started stripping and painting the drive! should be VERY SOON

Hey Vegas, I had somehow missed the update with the seats and color chip. I love it, but then again, I'm a UT Volunteer fan. Yeah, I know, its going to be a long season it looks like.

Great work on both boats though.

I still can't subscribe to any threads though? No idea what I'm doing wrong?

Hi System F
yes it does, heres how it works...the sterndrive part is on a pivot...it pivots abou 90% up and down..thats the LIFT motor.....it should be all the way down for fwd and back use....otherwise it will damage the BALL GEARS.....

the TRIM is hydraulic motor mounts that trim the drive up or down for planing and such...its kinda crazy but it works! I am not a fan however.....

theres LOTS of stringer drive boats here in vegas, for sale and such...
many people are scared of em...or what have ya....

They are easy to work on , the boot can be replaced using lots of soap without removing the drive part.....

I just down like a giant boot that could tear and leak..

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Hi all Im hijacking my own thread!

well we took a couple days "break" on the Sleekcraft project..which is ALMOST done...close to splash time!

took a "break"....to work on the Glastron...........
we have to get our 1990 Glastron 175 Sierra cleaned up and prepped for a new owner!
SELLING IT...to many boats..seasons over.. ones gotta go!

posting this as a precurser to what we will be doing to the Newman's trailer...and yes it would be 100 times easier to paint a trailer with the boat OFF the trailer we'll be taking the newman down to the docks and leave her overnight in the water, so we can paint and maintain the trailer the right way...Lake Mead charges $20 per night (way too much I think)

this is what we did today and yesterday oct 8th and 9th........

Vacuumed, cleaned, painted all the window trim matte black (it was brassed in the edges) the wife scrubbed the carpet, armoralled the upholstry, removed all the stuff, damn I didnt know a little boat could hold so much clutter!!!!!!
It was like our garage!! lol about 100 life preservers, fishing gear, extra back up parts, snorkling gear...etc...kids junk for the beach yadda yadda

the trailer was knackered up....lots of rock chips LOTS of rock chips, faded paint, chipped and cracked pinstriping etc.....
washed all that down, scrubbed up the tires and rims, heat gunned the trailer pinstripe tape, scraped it all off, acetone removed the glue residue nicely.

Sanded the whoe trailer down with 240 grit sandpaper....used rust converter on all the visible rust, resanded those areas with 100 grit, then 400, applied glazing putty to all teh chipped areas, re sanded those with 100 to knock it down then 400, wiped the trailer down with degreaser wax remover H.E.T.

masked it all off (what a pain that was!) shot single stage, Urethane automotive acrylic paint...looks slick now! (got 1/2 painted, the rest should be done by tomorrow....)
Did a quickie touch up paint on the sterndrive mercruiser...all the paint was a bit faded...quick sand down to rough it up and a coat of auto acrylic gloss black

then on to a quick engine tune up and carb cleanout....check the timing....
the oil was recently changed so that's good to go.....rockin on!
heres a link to about 20 pics

Hi John

lol Sure Ill paint yours bring it by! shouldnt be but about $750 bux in gas round trip!
I hope you have a big compressor, sandblasting takes alot of air....
is your trailer all rusty?

--------------Newman Update----------

While I was dorking around with the Glastron trailer on Oct 9th, my wife finished up the wet sanding the hull on the Newman...and considering it's age (1978) there were only 2 gel coat cracks! She ground those out and down about 1/4 inch, shallow plate shaped grind out....and filled em in with fiberglass filler (the one with the little fiberglass hairs in it)

then she block sanded the repairs down....
just a bit more cleanup on it and we are ready for the Orange peal paint YEA!
