Hi Mike....cool...glad you like dthe vid :D

UPDATE

didnt get too much done on the Newman...sweltering heat sunny and muggy!

today my wonderful wife Miranda...was wetsanding the hull with the kids
she got the sides and front underside re-sanded (she already sanded em with 320 grit wet 11 months ago....but we decided it needed more sanding....soooooo

IMG_9055.jpg

all the while I removed some rotten trailer plywood parts along the fenderwells and the associated screws (rusty and irritating to get off) and wetsanded the trailer fender on the starboard side.....

we used a floor jack and some wood to raise on side of the boat hull and tip it onto its side 3 inches....added some blocking (cement block and wood) at 3 points....removed 2 bunk boards on the starboard side...(she is real light considering she is stripped down to just hull/stringers/floor

IMG_9065.jpg

we tipped so we could wetsand with 220 under the hull.
....man she is CLEAN under there...no damage at all no scrapes...mustve come from a muck bottom lake! no rocks! lol

so I got under there and wetsanded about 1/2 of the starboard underside....

Bizzer working her little butt off :) gotta love it when the kids show interest!
IMG_9056.jpg

once we get it cleaned up and prepped we're going to paint the underside....let it dry a few days...tip it the other way...prep and paint......then drop it down on the new bunk boards and carpet (im gonna lay some plastic down just to make sure the paint doesnt get knackered up and stick to it somehow etc...that will float off 1rst time we splash it....(yes we will clean up the plastic mess) at some poiont we also will be spraying the trailer.....not sure if were gonna do it with boat on or if we want to leave the boat at the harbor for 2 days while we do up the trailer....thats would be ALOT easier!

then we can paint the sides and transom....after that the engine will go in YEA! then the plan is to paint the topside surfaces with Pearl Orange and Clearcoat...from there we can begin installing the interior! piece of cake right? lol

right now we're showered up and on to cooking dinner....RIBS! they are already in the oven....beer soaked...brown sugar/fresh cut onions/bbq sauces/garlic and onion powder/fresh garlic/ salt pepper / mesquite smoke liquid etc....wish I had a lb of bacon defrosted Id try what Im sure CheapboatKev would do....BACON on TOP!

Hey Vegas,
Man, I envy you. I wish I could get my family involved like yours. You are making memories that will last their entire life.
The heat here is pretty high too. I still like it better then the cold winters.
Take care and make more memories.
Thanks for sharing them.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

ok...what a lousy day....bank....1/2 hour wait (B of A) to cash a check
walmart run...uuuhg is all I can say

heres some stuff we had to buy to get rolling further on the Newman

auto parts store 1/2 way across town for auto paint supplies....bookoo! $$
got some poly paint reducer $48 gal ooooh! yowie!.... wax grease remover $15 ...... Petit Easypoxy 1 qt $35 1 1/2pint of fisheye eliminator $18 OUCH!
HD sponge rollers and such $15

already had on hand the house of kolor pearl orange (3 quarts) @ $48 per qt
HOK clear and the catalyst is even more expensive.....owie!

sooo hot and muggy...no painting today...we will be lucky if we can get some more wetsanding done today....brutal. suppossed to be rainy this weekend...so mebbe monday the muggy stuff will clear out and we can get something done paintwise....

our plan is Petit easypoxy the bottom 1/4 (where you would have to spray like a ceiling etc...so we're gonna roll tip the petit there......
Paint the rest of the hull using my HVLP gun and automotive polyurethane...
install the motor....then paint the topside pearl orange etc....assemble more form there

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

dont tell me that! :eek::eek:

actually I think another person mentioned it chips off easy too (on thier thread...mebeb it was John Scrsera from Mich

I sanded with 100 grit dry ...and Im on fiberglass...so mebbe Ill have better luck?

hey I still havent painted it...could roll and tip the urethan car stuff I got...its catylyzed so it should be better.....uuuhg.....
only reason I bought it was it looks like it lays nice...and since the boats on the trailer slightly tilted...it would be easier to roll the bottom than spray....DOH DOH DOH

I think Ill TEST IT 1rst...see if it flakes off..either that or use the urethane as a test and see if it rolls on ok...flows etc....I could RETURN that quart ($35)

.guess theres no massive hurry...a day or 2 for a test wont kill me thanks for the heads up Jeremy! ;)

I knew I should have went with RUSTOLEUM topside paint for the bottom ehheheh

It goes on easily, lays down nice and looks great. In that respect I give it a 10. In durability I give it a -32. You may (and hopefully do) not have the adhesion issues I have, but you'll still need to be real careful around it cuz it's gonna scuff, scratch and chip easily. My new recommendation to others is just stick with Rusto if you want to stay inexpensive or step up to a 2 part if you've got the cash.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

well...we changed our goose again and went with the Easypoxy anyways

we just finished with wiping the bottom of the hull completely with warm water...then vinegar and water spray and clean rags...then GROW brand wax and degreaser......

ok so we mixed up the can of Petit Easypoxy....got the foam roller and brush ready...started rolling! it is 105 degrees out...so this stuff was setting up fast...small areas then brush tipped...would have been better with some mineral spirits to thin it out...got about 3/4ths the bottom painited used up about 1/2 of the one quart that we have DOH! little more to roller but we're taking a break it is way too warm and our necks are getting sore from laying on our backs doing this on hull painting on the trailer. :(

post some pics of our progress a little later today! :D

ps the easypoxy is like spreading glue around...man that stuff is sticky...interesting the way it lays on.

Are you talking about the primer or the top coat? My experience with the paint was not that at all. Must be due to the heat. If you're talking about the primer....yeah I have heard that it's a bit tough to work with.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

Hi Ez....didnt use primer, we have bare fiberglass so can says GOOD TO GO....the paint itself...and yes it must be the heat...
hey when we did the glasswork last august on this boiat we had to move like lightning before it set up (polyurethane fiberglass resin)

==================================================

UPDATE PICS! click here for all of em!

here the hull is all sanded flat matte finish with 100 grit garnet sandpaper
Newman-update-005.jpg

Look Daddy...AVATAR! lol thats what my oldest daughter did to my 4 year old Bizzer...got into mommies makeup stash! (my wife never wears any.. I am very glad she doesnt wear any...cant stand the overload of makeup ...so no biggie)
Newman-update-014.jpg

heres the supplies ...about $60 bucks worth
Newman-update-015.jpg

laying on your back doing this BLOWS! lol especially on this rough concrete...its like a coral reef! only saving grace is the MGD out of the picture to the side...mmmmm energy drink!
Newman-update-018.jpg

here I am tipping the paint...too bad it was way too hot out (105 degrees) and after only rolling a small area...tipping the paint with a brush was about impossible withouot loading up the brush...needless to say though, we did an area without tipping, it made for a much flatter finish...better to brush it after rolling.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project pix and costs associated

As much as we wanted to use gloss white.......for some dumb reason, the local boat place had one can of gloss white that looked 120 years old....and was $50
and a newer looking can of petit semi gloss white.. for $35....money is a big deal these days...so went the cheaper route semi gloss!
well it is just for the absolute bottom area....

the finish would probably urn out better if we were doing this in a reasonable temp...oh well it is what it is!

heres the bunk boards and fender-well trimboards BEFORE
Newman-update-027.jpg

little bit of rot on these fender boards
