Hello,
I have a 1982 mercury 90hp when i first start the motor it will not get on plane. I open it all the way up, it will not get on plane. it acts like it wants to go then it will back down. After about 15 minutes it will get on plane and run fine the rest of the day, but Now I run it wide open and it will not get on plane at all. It was running fine at the begining of the year. I have rebuit the Carbs, fuel pump, all new hoses for fuel system, have new fuel seperator. I was thinking air or fuel leak. oh yeah when I open it up I sqeeze the ball it is still hard. Still the same thing. I sprayed starter fluid it while it was wide open but this still did not help. Motor idles good and starts every time too. Help Please!!

It is possible that your ignition is not making enough voltage to maintain a hot spark necessary to make power at higher speed.

Download the FREE Ouboard Ignition Troubleshooting Guide from CDI Electronics found thru the link on rapair.com

You will need a DVA Meter or a DVA Adaptor for Volt/Ohms Meter.

Thanks for the helpI think I figure it out it is not getting fire to my #2 and #6 coils. Once I switched the wires a I was getting fire to the coils. I will purchase a brain or part that is supplying juice to the coils. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!!!!!!!!:)

Is this a stacked 6 with TWO ignition modules?

You really should download the free troubleshooting Guide and test the system correctly to ensure that you do NOT purchase needless EXPENSIVE NON-RETURNABLE electrical parts.

Re: 1982 Mercury 90hp gains and losses power

Hello,
Still no change. I purchased a switch box installed and still no change. My #2 and #6 still not firing I am going do the following:

"No fire on the 1,3,5 or 2,4,6: Swap red and red/white wires, also blue with blue/white wires. If the problem moves to the other set of cylinders, the stator is at fault. Disconnect rectifier and retest. If the engine fires normally, replace the rectifier. If no change, we recommend replacement of the stator. If you replace the stator and the problem remains try another flywheel, if possible."

I tried this swapped wires and tried to disconnect the rectifier. Engine started fine. Still no fire to the #2 and the #6 cylinders. I will purchase a new rectifier and try it again. If no change, then i will replace the stator. Any more suggestions???????? Also I do not have a DVA tester.
