i have an old west bend 35 horse motor that is on a 1964 starcraft boat. i dont know how old the motor really is but we took it out a couple years ago and it overheated. i took it all apart and found the impeller to be missin a couple fins. would this be the issue?? if so where would i get a new one from. the impeller got misplaced or thrown out and i dont remember what it looked like. thanks

That's certainly an issue all right...you need a new impeller and check the compression as well...hope no damage was done by overheating it. Compression readings should be 80 lbs. PSI or better in both cylinders and not much difference between the two. The folks on the Ask A Member board at www.aomci.org can probably help you find a source for a new impeller. Model/serial number off the motor or a pix will help us/you date the motor so you can get the right impeller or other parts.

You probably can get a new impeller right here at iboats. The problem might be which one does it take. My guess is 18-8901. You will find them in the Chrysler parts. Chrysler bought the West Bend Outboard Line. Then sold it to US Marine (Force).

i tried to start it but the starter wont plunge into the flywheel. it just spins, so we pulled like heck to check for spark and it still has it at both cylinders. what would have burnt up?? also with the lower unit off how long can i run it for?? i dont want to put money into it if it isnt going to run.

What would have burnt up...when you turned it over with the battery charger, or when it overheated? You may have toasted the starter when trying to start it. If it still has spark and compression, check both cylinders, the overheating may not have killed it. If you want to run it without the LU, plumb your garden hose to the water inlet tube and see it you can get it started with water going through the cooling system. If it does start and run, go easy and don't rev it real high. To save your shoulder, take the pull-start rope mech off and look for a big notch in the edge of the flywheel...if it has one, use a knotted rope wrapped around the flywheel to start it...that will save your shoulder some grief. Sounds like you at least need a starter and impeller if you intend to run it anymore.

Re: west bend 35 hp overheat issue

so i ordered the 18-8901 impeller figuring it would fit my engine. when i got it i tried to put it on the shaft and it is just shy of fitting. is it something i can shave down to fit? or is the other impeller just a tad bigger.
