84 E-rude 30 air filter?

Just had to pull apart my carb to get out a piece of foam sucked in from the engine cover liner. There isn't any kind of filter on the carb. Is there something I could use to keep this from happening again that wouldn't mess with the fuel/air mix?

No air filters on most outboards (no dust, etc. on the water).

clean the engine cover liner... i personaly wouldnt put any kind of screen/filter on the carbs.. they werent made to have filter/screen on them...
