I have a 1999 Volvo GS 5.7L. On saturday it ran fine and parked it on lift. On sunday it will not crank over more than maybe a quarter turn. The battery was a 2002 model so I replaced the battery with a new one. 650 cranking amps. still will not turn over. pulled the starter off and engaged it and it works fine when in hand but reinstalled starter and same problem. How Common is it to get water in cylinders to water lock it or do you think it is more likely weak starter? Thanks for any tips

could be week starter or bad connection if its water locked it wouldnt move at all.Just dead end, like click, no almost turning. um without having say a ampmeter or seeing any sparks etc from loose connections you could pull the plugs and check for water. if none pours out crank it over a couple times with plugs out and see whats up. (no load really on starter with plugs out.)

Also I have had a many starters that have been ok bench tested but installed are junk.Chances are bad connection from what you describe, running fine then only 1/4 turn. new battery etc.

Well sure enough. Pulled the plugs and every cylinder had water in it. some more than others but definately all were wet. Turned over fine with plugs out. Also Pulled the dipstick and oil level was definately high but wasnt milky so hopelfully it wasnt ran with water in the oil. What do you think is most likely source of Water Intrusion?

spray some oil in there and hand crank over. i was told to get running as
possible. drain the water out of oil if you have a lower drain plug.

trying to figure out how water gets into both banks of cylinders if exhaust manifold fails. Is it more likely the intake manifold or is it common to fill whole engine with water if an exhaust manifold fails. seems weird both sides would fail at the same time. Thanks for helping me understand. This is driving me crazy!

baaaoo on that, sorry not the response i was hoping to hear. intake would likely be cause, nothing else would really get water in ALL your cylinders water would have to be getting to the upper plenum and be getting sucked in with fuel. Talking like a crack in the intake.

Re: Starter or Hydrolock

wanted to give update on hydrolock case. just got a call from boat mechanic and machine shop said there was some warpage on head surface which could cause water intake. So the heads were resurfaced and engine is being reassembled and installed. Hope the problem is solved
