Yamaha F40 stalls

I have a low-hours 2002 F40 4 stroke on a 20' pontoon boat. Seems to start well enough but will quit after a few seconds idling unless you manually work the throttles. If you manage to get it in gear before it quits it seems to run well enough at WOT but will quit as soon as you throttle back and then be hard to start unless it sits for a few minutes. Changed the fuel filter and dropped some fresh fuel and Seafoam gas treatment in the tank (it has a 26g onboard plastic tank that had some old gas in it - and yes, I know that's not good). Acts like it's fuel-starved but squeezing the fuelline bulb doesn't seem to help. I was going to try hooking up a seperate fuel supply to see if it is a fuel delivery problem - perhaps with the connector. I'd like to try and eliminate some of the obvious possibilities before handing it off to a mechanic. Any thoughts?

you may have to dump the old degraded fuel, have carbs cleaned, install water/fuel seperator, use the Stabil Marine all the time, you'll be good to go!
Good Luck!

Couldn't you use something like an STP water/fuel separator that you use in your car or that would be a bad move?

Isn't Stabil Marine used for long storage of your boat?

Thanks for the replies guys. I suspected the fuel was the culprit. I'll hook up a fresh fuel supply this weekend to confirm. The old in-line filter was actually quite clean but that's no guarantee the carbs haven't been affected. Is there a quick carb clean method without tearing the motor apart? I've also read that standard automotive carb clean spray can hurt these outboard carbs.

Hooked up a fresh fuel supply - set the idle speed a bit higher and she works much better. Added a healthy dose of Seafoam to the fuel so hopefully that'll help clear things out. Also noticed the rubber O-ring around the original fuel connector was disintegrating which probably didn't help.
I'm a boat repair newbie so the info on this forum has been a real big help.
Thanks guys!
