Hello I just purchased my first boat. Its a 1987 18ft Bayliner bass boat. With a 1983 200hp Johnson on the back the numbers on the motor are J200TXCTD the cover says Magflash Sea Horse. I checked the compression before buying and it read 115,120,120,120,118,110 And from what I have read thats ok. It had been sitting a couple years so I drained the old fuel and mixed a can of seafoam with a couple gallons of premium and she cranked write up and purred like a kitten reved up nice and smooth. had it in a tub of water and water pump worked great. so I took her out in the bay the next morning. Idled through the canal great go to give it some gas and it just dont do anything past 1/4 throttle so I figure ill idle around for a bit and give the seafoam a chance to clean up the carbs. Give it a bunch of gas and she reluctantly gets up on a plane now and once planeing has all the power in the world I got scared a couple times and was only at 4000 rpms so im zipping across the bay and over five minutes time slowly lose power but she lets me idle back to dock anything over idle just bogs and dies. once at dock wont even start now not a spuder or nothin. I noticed when I went to pull the carbs off theres no filter anywhere but i cant find anything about a filter for this motor. I was thinking it might have been sucking in the foam falling from the cover. I took apart a carb and it looks spottles i was realy kinda hopin it was just gummed up carbs. need help im soo new to outboards

No air filter, just an airbox usually.

You need to get the factory service book, look it up at the link below.
I'd go through it top to bottom before you burn it up.

www.outboardbooks.com

You need basic diagnostic tools, compression guage, timing light and spark gap tester. Look for a dead coil when it gets warmed up, post back results.
Inspect plugs.

So I started checking spark and didnt get anything on one cylender so started looking at the coil and found a small wire unhooked hooked it back up and she cranked write up. :) Took her down to the boat ramp and she runs great but I think it should have more power a 200 on a bass boat i would think i should have no problem getting up to plaining speed. Yet its still a stuggle then once plaining all the power in the world. So I brought her right back to dock so i dont do anymore damage. I pulled one carb apart she lookes spotless inside checked compresion still the same as before .

By the way it has a 15 1/4 X 17 SS prop that should be ok for this setup shouldnt it?

New to you, unknown past, ?

same advise, go through it top to bottom.
Get the manual.

Rebuild all carbs with kits, run wire through all jets.

Test all coils and wires, Champion plugs .30

Remove prop , check for fishing line, grease shaft and replace.

change gear oil, use new seals on screws.

Link/sync the ignition/carbs per the manual.

It should go like the blazes.:D

Re: Johnson 200hp J200TXCTD 1983 slowly lost power then died.

Last year I had a new to me Johnson 150, I don't know anything about big outboards so I hired a mechanic off craigslist to come over for 4 hrs and walk me through the maintainance, we did all the above , then fired it up and he showed me how to adjust it to spec. I already had the factory manual.
He also advised to change the fuel filter between the carbs and install a water seperator before the engine.
We found the power pack was weak so he ordered one for me, had me remove all grounds and clean down to new metal, removed coils and cleaned their grounds etc. Now it idles like a clock all day long, and gobs of power.
They're just a bit ...thirsty.:)
