Just recently I took out my johnson and whipped it around the reservoir on a fresh batch of fuel and the motor started smoking. I ran it at about 32 to 1 and towards the end of the 1/2 mile jaunt it began to start smoking a little.

I didn't think anything of it and just chalked it up to a bad mixture of fuel.
I then ran it last night on the stand and found that it was chugging quite a bit and smoking even more.

Thats when I came on here and found that I should be running it at 50-1 and the 32 to 1 was too heavy. So I did the math and found that to switch 2 3/4 gallons of fuel from 32 to 1 to 50 to 1 I need 1 1/2 gallons of pure gas to drown out the oil.

So I went out and bought 1 1/2 gallons of gas and added it to the mixture.
So I have 50 to 1 now. But again I brought it home and found that it was still smoking even after having switched my fuel.

I have brought the motor out a few times this year and no smoking or anything. really just a little tiny exhaust trail. but now its chugging and smoking like crazy.

This all started around the same time I started playing with the mixture. I always ran it at about 24 to1 or 32 to 1 thinking it was the right mixture. I think just recently it caught up to me.

what do you think?

anyways, when i run it in the rubber maid container, it leaves a thick coat of oil on the water when im done.

I'd like to assume it's just the mixture. This motor is not seized, still runs, and pumps water. The only thing I need to do is balance the flywheel because it has a chip in it and the motor will shake do to that. I just did the points and condensor was replace. it has new fuel filter/ pump. hoses. looks like the carb was either cleaned or replaced. I checked the oil level in the lower unit and all was well.

also there is a little idle adjustment on the front, or atleast im assuming thats what it is. Should I play with that to get it running better?

I do so on my 55 evinrude 3hp and find that a little adjustment makes a big difference. I just think that for a 6hp if I could get that chugging to stop and the motor starts firing correctly, the motor could be pushing my 12 foot alluminum a lot faster then it does.

I noticed that last night when it was running in the bucket. It was chugging and not really burning efficiently. I'm assuming this could be a bad fuel mixture meaning too much oil.

well I want to save this motor. It has had too much invested in recent times to fail now.

I've had that happen before with my first motor I started working on.

well let me know if you can help me.

I want to get this thing on the water.

See http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352 for the idle mixture adjustment

But first make sure you have good sparks at each plug. Also be certain that both plugs are firing properly.

New plugs if in any doubt about them. (J6C gapped at 0.030")

It may of course need a carb clean. You cannot tell by its appearance but not suspecting that from what you have said.

Any evidence that it may be flooding?

I wonder if the "chugging" is four stroking due to a rich mixture...... due to flooding?

Need to be sure carb is Ok before doing the idle adjustment really.

i would say with that mixture you are probably in need of a decarb.

go to the frequently asked questions forum and it will explain everything.............. and if you think it smokes now wait untill you start the decarb.

that little knob that is connected to the carb is the idle mixture....... it will only effect the idle not top end.

OK WELL FIRST OFF I was wondering myself if that chugging was due to flooding because I always make sure the bulb is primed even after running it. and while I'm trying to start it sometimes I don't even realize there is already gas in it and I'll keep priming it. I'd assume that if your over priming your forcing fuel into the cylinders before firing.

anyways.I know I can clean the carb on that quite easily. maybe I'll do that first. I'm I just basically looking for excessive tarnish? I mean what ever would cause that much smoke should be quite obvious to figure out.

I assumed it was the fuel mixture because It happened just recently when I re-uped on the fuel supply. I was told 32 to 1 when it was really 50-1. I've been running it at 32 to 1 all year.

Has it caught up with me and I just simply have to run 50 to 1 for a while to let the oil burn off?

well it makes sense to me but I'm no expert.
So check carb first? ok im on it.

Re: 66 6 hp johnson is smoking

ok people try to help me out.

I removed the carb to find that there was absolutely no varnish what so ever in the carb and all the gaskets are fresh cut.

It does have no plugs, the gaps might not be perfect but it was still running damn good for a 66 the other day.

oh yeah..to remove the carb on this model you have to remove the recoil assembly partially.

anyways. i love this engine. its the seahorse model and thats exactly where I want this motor to live out the remainder of its days, at the families cottage on prudence island.

anyways. yes thats my dream for this motor but I'm going to have to get it sound before it goes out there.

besides the smoking the only problem I have is a small chip in the flywheel that causes the motor to shake. I want to take care of that problem before running this thing again. but luckily i know how to do that.

anyways. so the carb is out of the picture.

I don't know what else to do.

here's an idea..

What if I run like a 60 to 1 mixture for a few minutes to burn out the oil thats left over in the engine from the excessive 32 and 24 to 1 running thats been taken place on this motor?

thanks.

Oil is in the gas - it burns along with the gas, and it smokes. That's what you should expect from a 2 cycle motor. Use TCW3 synthetic oil, it will smoke less, but DON'T go with less than a 50:1 gas:eek:il ratio.

Re: 66 6 hp johnson is smoking

yes i know, thats why im assuming its just a bad mixture. i guess after running it at 32 to 1 for awhile oil might have built up. now having switched to 50 to 1 the motor is burning off all the excess.

anyways. thats why im gonna figure is the problem.. but until i can get to that i need a new fuel filter. i broke the nipple off of it that attaches to the fuel line that attaches to the carb while removing the carb.

im not giving up on this though, i have another problem now though and need to fix that now.

Re: 66 6 hp johnson is smoking

what do you mean?

this is only one post i made for this topic, its my post and I'll deal with it how I want to deal with it. What ever help I ask for and whatever information I give is up to me. I say what I feel needs to be said to give people a better idea of where I'm at. Now nobody can really say whats right or wrong in this instance because there is no answer to that.

i am simply trying to keep people informed of where I am at on this issue.

everytime i come on here you harrass me. I think who ever hired you needs to be informed of your natzi like behavior. I didn't know posting on message boards had any rules outside the obvious stuff like no swearing or threatening, things of that nature. I don't think you should go around and mistake my postings for anything more then me being enthusiastic about getting my problem fixed. maybe it doesn't do anything for you, but for me it narrows things down and puts things into perspective.

just trying to get you to realize your not the only one here, and if you were I wouldn't go around telling droids not to double post, because seriously who would you be talking to at that point? a computer chip?
