i have read through the forum and can't seem to find an answer to my questions or can't seem to put it together

i am looking at mid 80's 90hp Evinrude and being told that the "electric control" for the hydrolic power tilt and trim is out.

how can i tell what is broken? are the parts still available? is all tilt/trim hydraulic/electric? what are the pitfalls to buying something not working?

any input would be greatly appreciated

Re: tilt trim question

You may get more answers in the Johnson/Evinrude forum.

I've got an '81 Johnson 90, so that's basically the same engine you're looking at. The "trim control box" contains two relays, one for up and one for down. The trim switch on the throttle will energize one or the other of the relays, and that runs the trim pump in one direction or the other.

There are just a handful of things that could be wrong - the trim switch, the relays, the trim pump motor, or wiring (oh, there's a fuse inside the control box also, but nobody EVER forgets to check that :) ) Everything is relatively inexpensive EXCEPT for the pump motor. That could run into a few hundred dollars.

Yes, parts are still available. I don't have the URL handy, but search for BRP parts catalog and you'll find a complete parts list with drawings. It's easiest to lookup the part number, then take that to an OMC dealer and they can get you going.

If I were buying this engine I'd assume the worst (trim pump), and be certain that the engine was priced accordingly. If it was cheap/easy to fix then why hasn't the current owner fixed it?
